Stolz repeats world speedskating hat trick, Canada’s Bloemen, Fish reach podium

CALGARY — Speedskating star Jordan Stolz repeated his world championship hat trick, while Canadians Ted-Jan Bloemen and Graeme Fish reached the podium in the 10,000 metres.

Stolz won the men’s 1,500 metres Sunday after victories in the 1,000 and 500 metres in Calgary. The 19-year-old American became the first male to win gold in three world championship individual races last year in Heerenveen, Netherlands.

Davide Ghiotto of Italy defended his 10k world title. Calgary’s Bloemen took the silver medal and Fish of Moose Jaw, Sask., the bronze.

Ghiotto’s time of 12 minutes 38.81 seconds at the Olympic Oval was the fastest of his career. Bloemen finished in 12:47.01 and Fish in 12:48.61.

Stolz claimed the men’s 1.5k in 1:41.44 ahead of runner-up Kjeld Nuis of the Netherlands in 1:42.66 and bronze medallist Peder Kongshaug of Norway in 1:42.66.

Joy Beune and Irene Schouten finished one-two for the Netherlands in the women’s 5,000 metres. Beune won in 6:47.72, which was 1.26 ahead of teammate Schouten. Czechia’s Martina Sablikova was the bronze medallist 4.16 seconds back of Beune.

Japan’s Miho Takagi was victorious in the women’s 1,500 metres in 1:52.29. Runner-up Mei Han of China was just over four-tenths back and Beune placed third.
