Brownlow Medal: Dane Swan jibes aimed at Nadia Bartel binned during Twitter takeover

Collingwood champion Dane Swan has revealed several jibes aimed at high-profile influencer Nadia Bartel were binned during his annual live coverage of Sunday’s Brownlow Medal count.

Swan, himself a winner of the AFL’s highest individual honour, regularly commandeers Sportsbet’s Twitter account on the league’s night of nights — with few players, league officials, WAGS or celebrities off limits.

But the 37-year-old said that multiple gags about Bartel, who was filmed recently snorting a white powder off a plate, were censored.

“PSA: I'm getting a lot of Nadia gags knocked back tonight,” he tweeted.

The firestorm around Bartel erupted earlier this month when vision of her sniffing a substance off a plate was released on social media.

The live video was understood to have been posted accidentally to the account of Bartel’s pal and business partner, Ellie Pearson.

Bartel, the former wife of Geelong AFL champion Jimmy Bartel, took to Instagram to issue an apology, even though she did not directly reference the matter.

While Swan’s crosshairs were directed away from Bartel, players, fashion choices, hair cuts and even borders were on the table.

“Big thanks to the country of WA for hosting AFL's night of nights,” Swan tweeted, having previously been critical of lockdowns in Victoria.

“Once the borders are open, WA can keep this band.

“Where’s Meatloaf when you need him?!”

Meanwhile Port Adelaide's Ollie Wines admitted to mixed emotions after winning his club's first AFL Brownlow Medal, saying the award and their disastrous end to the season have him rattled.

In a pulsating count on Sunday night that was one of the most entertaining in Brownlow history, Wines polled 36 votes to finish three clear of Western Bulldogs captain Marcus Bontempelli.

The Bulldogs star had led since round 12, but did not poll after round 19.

Wines, who entered the count as the slightest of favourites, hit the lead with one vote in round 22, and snared another two votes in round 23 – against the Bulldogs – to secure the medal.

It was some small consolation for the Power after the Bulldogs humiliated them by 71 points two Saturday nights ago in the preliminary final.

The Bulldogs will play Melbourne next Saturday in the grand final.

“I'm a little bit rattled, to be honest, still,” Wines said on stage at Perth's Optus Stadium, the grand final venue.

Port Adelaide Brownlow Medal winner Ollie Wines speaks to Sunrise after winning AFL’s top honour

“There are so many great players that I still look up to at my age … and a lot of them are obviously playing on Saturday in the biggest game of the year.

“I'm extremely envious of them and I'd love to be in their position.

“I know our boys – it's burning inside them as much as it is in me, and we'll be back next year better than ever.”
