Brown snake hiding in Christmas tree gives Adelaide family shock of their lives

On the first day of ChristmasDown Under gave to meA brown snake in my placcy tree.

A terrified Adelaide family got the fright of their lives when they discovered a deadly brown snake hiding among the tinsel and baubles of their Christmas tree on Thursday morning.

It had been hiding in the box the tree and ornaments had been stored in.

The frantic family quickly called snake handler Jarrad Waye, who had a job on his hands getting the slippery serpent to leave its festive nest.

“I’ve never dealt with one in a Christmas tree before. It was quite difficult to get out tangled around all the lights and the wires,” he said.

While wrangling this unwanted gift from such a spot was a first for Mr Waye, it’s not the first time a sneaky reptile has hidden in festive fare.

A tiger snake was reportedly pulled from a Christmas tree in Melbourne, while a red-bellied black snake gave a Sunshine Coast family quite the fright.

For the record, brown, tiger and red-bellied black are three of Australia’s most deadly snakes.

According to Australian Geographic, the red-bellied black snake is the 10th most dangerous, describing its bite as “no picnic”.

“The venom causes blood-clotting disorder and muscle and nerve damage, enough to knock you off your feet.”

Meanwhile, a bite from a tiger snake causes “pain in the feet and neck, tingling, numbness and sweating, followed by breathing difficulties and paralysis. The venom also damages the blood and muscles, leading to renal failure”, making it the third most dangerous Aussie serpent.

In top spot is the fast-moving, aggressive brown snake.

Known for having a filthy temper, its venom is ranked second most toxic in the world.

One bite causes “progressive paralysis and stops the blood from clotting, which may take many doses of antivenom to reverse. Victims may collapse within a few minutes.”

Yikes.

Stay safe when dressing your trees this Christmas, kids.
