Amidst the bustling activity of the 2024 NFL draft, the Denver Broncos found themselves at the center of trade interest for wide receiver Courtland Sutton.
According to Jarrett Bailey of USA TODAY, both the Los Angeles Rams and the Pittsburgh Steelers reached out to Denver about Sutton’s availability. This interest came after Sutton did not attend the team’s voluntary offseason workouts, hinting at his desire for a renegotiated contract.
Despite these inquiries, the Broncos have decided to keep Sutton for now, according to 9News reporter Mike Klis. Their reluctance to trade him seems rooted in their belief in his critical role for the team’s future. Denver views Sutton as a key component in the development of rookie quarterback Bo Nix, who they hope will emulate the success of the Sean Payton-coached duo of Drew Brees and Michael Thomas in New Orleans.
Adding complexity to Denver’s decision is their already crowded wide receiver room. With the addition of Troy Franklin and Devaughn Vele from the recent draft, the team also boasts a deep roster of receivers including Marvin Mims, Tim Patrick, Josh Reynolds, Lil’Jordan Humphrey, Jalen Virgil, and Brandon Johnson. This depth provides Denver with flexibility and bargaining power.
While Sutton’s future with the Broncos is secure for now, the possibility of revisiting trade discussions remains open.
As the team progresses into the summer, how they manage their stacked receiver lineup and Sutton’s contract will be crucial. However, he appears set to continue his career in Denver, at least into the upcoming season.
