Earlier this month, Motorola launched the Edge 50 Pro (review) in India. The phone does pack some impressive features such as an IP68 rating, a premium look and capable cameras for its asking price, but how does it fare against the recently unveiled Edge 50 Ultra? From camera to design, here’s a quick comparison between the two that will help you decide if you should buy the Edge 50 Pro right away or wait for Motorola’s latest flagship.

Design and display

Motorola’s latest flagship – the Edge 50 Ultra comes in three colours. While the Forest Grey colour and Peach Fuzz versions have a vegan leather finish, Motorola has used real wood for the Nordic Wood colourway. On the other hand, the Motorola Edge 50 Pro is available in three colours – Black Beauty, Luxe Lavender and Moonlight Pearl, with all colourways featuring a vegan leather back that looks similar to its more expensive cousin.

Both the Edge 50 Ultra and Edge 50 Pro have an aluminium frame and sport a 6.7-inch 144Hz pOLED screen. They are also IP68-rated, meaning you can dip them underwater without worry. However, the Edge 50 Ultra may be brighter with a peak brightness of 2,500 nits compared to the Edge 50 Pro’s 2,000 nits display.

Since both devices have the same screen size and refresh rate, you won’t see any noticeable difference between the two when watching videos or scrolling on social media.

Performance and software

The Motorola Edge 50 Ultra packs the newly announced Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 chipset, which is basically a slightly toned-down version of Qualcomm’s latest flagship – the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. On the other hand, the Edge 50 Pro features the Snapdragon 7 Gen 3, a mid-range chipset that performs similarly to the infamous Snapdragon 888.

Both the Edge 50 Ultra and Edge 50 Pro run on Android 14 out of the box with Motorola’s Hello UI skin, which packs some pretty useful features while offering a near-stock Android experience.

While you will get the same lag-free experience when scrolling through social media and switching between apps, the Edge 50 Ultra will perform better than its most affordable cousin when it comes to video editing and playing games at the highest settings.

If you are looking for the latest and fastest Motorola phone, the Edge 50 Ultra is a no-brainer. However, those who don’t play a lot of games or do resource-intensive tasks on their smartphones can save some money and can go with the Edge 50 Pro.

Camera

One of the major differences between the two is in terms of the camera capabilities. While Motorola phones may not have the best cameras, they offer pretty good value for money.

The Edge 50 Ultra and Edge 50 Pro have a triple camera setup, but the former wins the megapixel war. The Edge 50 Ultra packs a 50MP primary camera along with a 50MP ultrawide sensor and a 64MP telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom. On the other hand, the Edge 50 Pro has a 50MP primary camera accompanied by a 13MP ultrawide shooter and a 10MP telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom. However, both devices have a 50MP selfie shooter with the same specs, meaning Motorola might be using the same selfie sensor on both phones.

Those looking for a camera phone should wait for the Edge 50 Ultra, but if you seldom take photos and don’t want the best camera setup on a Motorola phone, the Edge 50 Pro is the way to go.

Battery

When it comes to battery, both devices share the same battery and offer identical charging speeds. Motorola says the Edge 50 Ultra and Edge 50 Pro pack a 4,500mAh battery that supports 125W wired charging, 50W wireless charging and 10W reverse wireless charging. However, the Edge 50 Pro may last a bit longer since it has a weaker processor, but we can’t say anything for sure.

Motorola Edge 50 Ultra vs Edge 50 Pro: Should you wait for the flagship?

Motorola launched the Edge 50 Pro in India earlier this month. In our review, the phone blazed through everyday tasks without a hiccup and took decent photos, so if you are looking for a mid-range device that performs on almost all fronts, the Edge 50 Pro is an easy recommendation considering it starts from Rs 31,999.

However, it is still unclear if the phone maker has any plans to launch the Edge 50 Ultra in India since the last time Motorola brought its flagship in India was back in 2022. The company yesterday announced the Edge 50 Ultra with a price tag of EUR 999, which roughly translates to Rs 88,527. This is more than double the price of the already-launched Edge 50 Pro, so unless you are looking for Motorola’s latest flagship phone, the Edge 50 Pro is a good phone for the asking price.
