British media make Kyrgios public enemy No.1 and accuse 'Nasty Nick' of being a 'cretin' who's stuck in an 'orgy of self-pity'

Polarising Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios has yet again been painted as the chief villain in the eyes of the relentless British media following his on-court antics at Wimbledon on Tuesday.
The 27-year-old, who beat local hope Paul Jubb in five sets on day two at the All England Club, was labelled a ‘cretin’ who is stuck in an ‘orgy of self pity’ in one scathing assessment.
The notorious UK tabloids continued the pile on, with The Sun labelling the Canberra-born athlete a ‘hothead’.
It followed ‘Nasty Nick’ Krygios admitting post-match that he spat in the direction of one spectator who he claimed abused him during his victory on Court 3.
He will be heavily fined by tournament officials – but not disqualified.
Kyrgios also called a line judge a ‘snitch with no fans’, said another match official ‘can’t see the ball’ because he was ‘in his 90s’ and ate sushi during his post-match press conference.
Nick Kyrgios became an easy target for the British press when footage emerged of him spitting in the direction of an unruly fan during his match on Tuesday
Kyrgios beat local hope Paul Jubb in five sets – and later told reporters he is becoming tired of some fans targeting him courtside
Media identity Piers Morgan tweeted Kyrgios has ‘upgraded himself from massive d*ck to nasty bully’
In his sporting analysis, Mirror reporter Harry Thompson compared his behaviour to other infamous Wimbledon meltdowns, notably from Tim Henman and Jeff Tarango in 1995 and John McEnroe in 1981.
Henman, who was never able to win the sport’s most coveted grand slam in the men’s singles, was sent packing from the tournament after clattering a ball into the ear of an innocent ball girl during a doubles match.
US player Tarango created international headlines in the same year when he told the crowd to ‘shut up’, and labelled the umpire the ‘the most corrupt official in tennis’.
In sensational scenes, he forfeited his match after storming off the court before play was completed.
McEnroe’s iconic, ‘You cannot be serious!’ following a botched line call is now part of tennis folklore, and unfolded during a first round match against Tom Gullikson.
The Telegraph’s chief sports writer Oliver Brown didn’t miss either, likening Kyrgios’ behaviour to an ‘endless monologue of rage’.
The Independent was a little more sympathetic – but scribe George Sessions also outlined the spitting saga in detail – and several of Krygios’ ‘prickly chats’.
Kyrgios unleashed on ‘disrespectful’ fans at Wimbledon in a fiery post-match interview where he spent most of his time eating sushi

He later recalled the Aussie’s belief he was being ‘disrespected’ by certain members of the crowd, who he was adamant were courtside purely to goad him.
‘I love this tournament. It’s got nothing to do with Wimbledon. I just think it’s a whole generation of people on social media (and in person) feeling like they have a right to comment on every single thing with negativity,’ Kyrgios told reporters in the post-match press conference.
‘It just carries on to real life … I’m just starting to think that it’s normal when it’s really not.’
Kyrgios will push for a spot in the third round when he is back on court on Thursday night from 9.15pm (AEST).
He faces 26th seed Filip Krajinović from Serbia on Court 2 – and it is safe to say it is a match the local media will be watching every point intently.
Kyrgios is also scheduled to play his first round doubles match with good mate Thanasi Kokkinakis, who was outclassed in the men’s singles by Novak Djokovic on Wednesday in straight sets.
