Miceala Diedrichs, 24, is currently in Wellington and has been trying to work alongside the state’s health authorities to make it home in time for the funeral, but is quickly running out of options.
Her father Shane recently died following a motorcycle accident and her sister Emma and mother Deborah were forced to deliver the heartbreaking news over the phone.
“Probably, as a mother, that was the hardest thing I have ever had to do,” Deborah Diedrichs said.
“For a lot of people the funeral might be one day, but for us … it’s the rest of our lives,” Emma Diedrich said.
Micaela has tried several times to get on a quarantine “red flight” with Air New Zealand, though routes are limited and getting a seat is even harder.
“FaceTiming a 24-year-old to bury her father, it’s just not something we want to do,” Deborah said.
Exhausting nearly every option, Micaela is now looking at a private jet just to get home.
The family aren’t sure if they can afford the flight, but are determined to make it happen.Internet Explorer Channel Network
