ALBAWABA Yumi Katsura, a distinguished figure in the world of bridal fashion, has passed away in Tokyo at the age of 94, as reported by Japanese media on Tuesday.
Born Yumi Yuki in Tokyo in 1930, Katsura’s journey in the fashion industry began after her graduation from university when she pursued studies in design and couture techniques in France.
Making history in 1964, she embarked on her career as Japan’s inaugural Western-style bridal fashion designer, earning global recognition for her creations adorned with distinctive rose motifs.
In acknowledgment of her remarkable contributions, Katsura attained a significant milestone in 1999 by becoming the first Asian individual to achieve full membership in the National Chamber for Italian Fashion.
Her legacy further solidified as she became a fixture in the Paris Haute Couture collection, participating annually since 2003. Katsura’s passing marks the end of an era in the world of bridal fashion, leaving behind a profound impact on the industry she helped shape.
