Brian Wilson formally placed under conservatorship
Two conservators have been approved to oversee Brian Wilson’s affairs.
The Beach Boys singer’s family filed for a conservatorship in February, a few weeks after the 81-year-old musician’s wife, Melinda Ledbetter Wilson, passed away because he is suffering from a “major neurocognitive disorder (such as dementia)”, and on Thursday (09.05.24), a court appointed the ‘Good Vibrations’ hitmaker’s business manager LeeAnn Hard and manager and publicist Jean Sievers to look after his personal matters.
According to documents obtained by People magazine, Brian “lacks the capacity to make his own healthcare decisions” and so the conservators have been “granted authority to authorise the administration of medications appropriate for the care and treatment of Major Neurocognitive Disorder.”
In addition, the ‘Wouldn’t It Be Nice’ singer’s children, Carnie, Wendy, Dakota Rose, Dylan, Delanie Rae, Dash, and Daria, must be consulted by LeeAnn and Jean “regarding all material-related healthcare decisions.”
If his children “wish to be added” to a text chain with the nurses providing updates on their father’s condition, they “shall be added.”
In April, Brian’s court-appointed attorney confirmed the musician was happy to have his long-term associates appointed as conservators.
He said: “[Brian ] confirmed that the Petitioners have worked for him for years and clearly acknowledged that they were his long time managers who he placed his trust in, and further said that he would trust them to act in his best interests after I explained to him the duties they would have if they were appointed as his co-conservators.
“He acknowledged that he relied on his spouse to assist him with his daily activities before she died and that he still needs help in that regard, including making sure he receives timely and proper medical care as well as making sure that he takes his daily medications.”
Brian’s family previously explained they wanted a conservatorship put in place so he would experience “no extreme changes” in the wake of his wife’s death.
His children told People in a statement: “Following the passing of Brian’s beloved wife Melinda, after careful consideration and consultation among Brian, his seven children, Gloria Ramos and Brian’s doctors (and consistent with family processes put in place by Brian and Melinda), we are confirming that longtime Wilson family representatives LeeAnn Hard and Jean Sievers will serve as Brian’s co-conservators of the person.
“This decision was made to ensure that there will be no extreme changes to the household and Brian and the children living at home will be taken care of and remain in the home where they are cared for by Gloria Ramos and the wonderful team at the house who have been in place for many years helping take care of the family.”
They added the ‘I Get Around’ singer can still “enjoy all of his family and friends and continue to work on current projects as well as participate in any activities he chooses.”
