Gabby Petito’s parents have said that they “want vengeance and justice” for the loss of their daughter, and hope to see their daughters fiancé, Brian Laundrie, behind bars.

In an interview with 60 Minutes Australia, Ms Petito’s stepfather, Jim Schmidt, said: “We want vengeance and justice, and for him to pay for his crimes.”

Nichole Schmidt, Ms Petito’s mother, added: “I just want to get him in a cell for the rest of his life.”

Meanwhile, today marks the 31st day since Mr Laundrie was reported missing by his parents. North Port Police have not reported any new evidence, but have continued to search for him, alongside the FBI, in the Carlton Reserve, a 24,000-acre nature preserve, where he was reportedly hiking alone before going missing in September.

Authorities have previously said there is believed to be a 50 per cent chance that Mr Laundrie is still alive.

In a heartbreaking new interview, Gabby Petito’s mother and stepfather recalled Brian Laundrie as “quiet” and “polite,” and took a painful look back at the couple’s ill-fated van trip.

A protester outside the Laundrie family’s home said through tears that she believed Ms Petito was a victim of domestic violence, and felt she could relate to her experience.

“I feel like I needed to be here for Gabby, basically because I know what she went through,” the woman, who said she’d traveled all the way from Minnesota, told YouTuber Joseph Morris. “This girl was completely helpless. She was stuck… And it hurts my heart, because I know how she was feeling. And I couldn’t just not do anything.”

The Appalachian Trail – the land of Laundrie look-alikes

17:45 , Celine Wadhera

As the search for Brian Laundrie enters its second month, New Yorker writer Charles Bethea explored the ways that amateur sleuths have been looking for the fugitive along the Appalachian Trail – and mistaking other “archetypal, long-distance” hikers for him.

One couple, Severin Beckwith and Anna Brettmann, who were hiking from Georgia to Virginia along the trail in late September, had an unexpected encounter with a number of US Marshals who came bursting into their hotel room while they were taking a nap.

It turns out that Mr Beckwith, like many bearded, skinny and pale hikers, resembled Mr Laundrie, and someone at the hotel had tipped off the marshals.

“The preponderance of such men,” Mr Bethea writes, “perhaps, has made the Appalachian Trail a locus of the manhunt among the amateur set.”

For next week’s @newyorker: I joined the Brian Laundrie hunt on the Appalachian Trail—where skinny, bald, bearded men abound. I met one who took the trail name “Not Brian” after U.S. Marshals woke him at gunpoint:

Dog the Bounty Hunter denies pitching show on the search for Brian Laundrie

Dog the Bounty Hunter has denied claims that he had pitched a show to A&E network that would follow the search for Brian Laundrie.

He told The Sun: “Anything about us ever going to A&E, that is a lie”. And added: “Will this search cause us to get a show? I doubt it.”

However, the 68-year-old told the newspaper that he would “absolutely” consider using some of the footage that he had captured in his search for Mr Laundrie in a show at a later date, but insisted that he was not currently producing a show.

With Halloween around the corner, a handful of internet trolls have taken it upon themselves to create DIY Brian Laundrie costumes.

One image shared online showed a man wearing a laundry basket around his waist, filled with laundry and tide detergent, The US Sun reported. “My name is Brian” was digitally added to the photo.

Another photo featured a man wearing a green morph suit with a flower mask on top. The image of a flowerbed was added to the photo, referencing an online theory that Mr Laundrie is hiding in a secret bunker below a flower bed in his parents’ backyard. This photo had been titled ‘Brian Laundrie’s Halloween Costume this year”.

Joseph Petito: ‘There has to be change’

12:30 , Celine Wadhera

Gabby Petito’s father has said that he hopes to use the media attention surrounding his daughter’s disappearance and death to drive change around missing persons and domestic violence cases.

“How many missing children, of all colours, of all races, of all genders, go missing? That don’t have this kind of social media explosion,” he told 60 Minutes Australia.

“I’m fortunate that it did, I’m very humbled that I did.

“But what kind of person would I be if I wasted it and not engage in a conversation that’s going to make a difference. There has to be change, there has to be meaning behind it.”

Gabby’s mother, Nichole Schmidt said: “I think silence speaks volumes. I believe they know probably, if not everything, they know most of the information”.

Joseph Petito, Ms Petito’s father, said that it was “torturous” and “cruel” for the Laundrie family to withhold anything about what happened to his daughter.

Five key questions about the Gabby Petito case

Saturday 16 October 2021 19:36 , Nathan Place

Gabby Petito’s body has been found, and her cause of death has been revealed. But many important questions remain.

The biggest question is obvious: Where is Brian Laundrie? But also, why did Mr Laundrie buy a new phone? Why did he and his parents go camping in Florida in the days after he returned from his trip with Ms Petito, alone?

The Independent’s Bevan Hurley takes a look at these and other questions here:

Can Brian Laundrie be tried in absentia?

Saturday 16 October 2021 18:44 , Nathan Place

Brian Laundrie has been missing for more than a month. Searches led by both the North Port Police and the FBI have turned up no new clues as to his whereabouts, and a scattering of reported sightings across the country have largely been proven false.

Though Mr Laundrie has not been charged with Gabby Petito’s death, he has been named a person of interest in the case. But what happens if he’s never found? Can he be tried in absentia? Can his family be charged with a crime? The Independent’s Graig Graziosi takes a look at all the different possibilities:

Friend claims Brian Laundrie might have resources to leave US illegally

Saturday 16 October 2021 15:03 , Celine Wadhera

A long-time friend of Brian Laundrie has said that it is possible that he had the resources to leave the US illegally.

The friend, who knew Mr Laundrie from a young age, told The Sun that Brian was a good planner who could execute his plans precisely.

“I think he’d be able to put the resources together to get out of the country, either illegally or under some sort of fake identification,” the friend said.

“He’s the type of person that would be able to drop everything to secure his means of not being captured and to evade arrest or evade prosecution from what seems to be a pending crime.”

The friend also said that Mr Laundrie had often talked about New Zealand, and said that if he had the means, he would likely try to reach the Oceanic country.

“I’m sure if he had the time and the resources in a few years and he really needed to getaway from this issue, that’s probably somewhere he would end up,” Mr Laundrie’s friend told the paper.

Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Saturday 16 October 2021 14:42 , Celine Wadhera

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month in the United States, and the Gabby Petito case has drawn significant attention to the plight of domestic violence over the past two months.

According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV), nearly 20 people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner in the US. This equates to more than 10 million women and men per year.

If you are experiencing domestic violence and seeking anonymous, confidential help, you can reach the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233. If you are in immediate danger, call 9-1-1 (999 in the UK).

Wyoming restaurant fight is key in Petito’s fate, FBI behavioural analyst says

Saturday 16 October 2021 13:42 , Celine Wadhera

The altercation between Gabby Petito and Brian Laundrie witnessed near the Merry Piglets Tex-Mex restaurant in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, in late August, could be the key to Ms Petito’s demise, a behavioural analyst has said.

Dr Ann Wolbert Burgess, who pioneered the FBI’s Behavioural Science Unit told Fox News Digital: “The restaurant incident … is the second and most important” of two events that raised red flags prior to the 22-year-old’s death.

Nina Celie Angelo, a witness to the incident, said that she believed Mr Laundrie had been arguing with staff over the bill, and described his body language as “aggressive”. At one point, Ms Angelo said that Ms Petito apologised for his behaviour.

“How she has to apologise for his behaviour is something that’s kind of characteristic, and this probably enrages him even more because he wants to appear in a certain way,” Dr Burgess said.

Dr Burgess added that the other incident that suggested there were serious issues in their relationship was the fight between Ms Petito and Mr Laundrie to which police were called on 12 August in Moab, Utah.

Petito case years away from going cold, crime scene investigator says

Saturday 16 October 2021 12:42 , Celine Wadhera

Sheryl McCollum, a crime scene investigator and director of the Cold Case Investigative Research Institute, said that the Petito case was far from going cold.

“As far as this being a cold case… it’s a department by department definition, but across the board, typically people will accept three to five years with absolutely no new leads, no new evidence, no new nothing (until it goes cold), and that is far from where we are,” she told CNN.

“That’s not the case here at all. Local departments, where they may believe there’s been a sighting, they will typically for years have that person at the forefront of their minds,” she added.

Memorial bench to be erected outside North Port City Hall

Saturday 16 October 2021 11:42 , Celine Wadhera

A Gabby Petito memorial bench will be erected outside North Port City Hall, where an impromptu memorial to the murdered 22-year-old stood until earlier this week, the city has confirmed.

The three-person bench will be made of steel and will be bright, colourful and inviting, Fox 7 News reported.

Aaron Betzner, bench designer and owner of metal-fabrication company A Squared Fabrication, said that when he heard a memorial for Ms Petito would become permanent, he wanted to help.

He told the outlet that he was working with a member of the Petito family to ensure the final piece would align with the family’s vision for the memorial.

“Butterflies was the number one biggest, biggest thing,” Mr Betzner said, and confirmed that the bench would contain 15 butterflies, alongside features designed to attract the beautiful winged insect.

He added that the bench would be “kind of a little sanctuary”, where people could “come and sit, reflect on their own life, reflect on Gabby”.

The final version will be white with colourful butterflies. It is expected to be delivered by the end of November.

Why did authorities conduct ‘training exercises’ at Carlton Reserve on Friday?

Saturday 16 October 2021 10:42 , Celine Wadhera

On Friday, officers participating in a “special response team training” activity were seen entering the Carlton Reserve armed with rifles.

Former FBI agent Dennis Franks told NewsNation Now that he found the training “interesting but not necessarily unusual”, adding that it could even be an economical means of continuing the search efforts.

“When you have a lot of resources devoted to something, there’s got to be a lot of expenditure and resources in this. It would not be unusual to incorporate training at the same time,” he said.

He added that the training could have been pre-scheduled and those in charge decided to conduct the training in the reserve to assist with the ongoing search.

Mr Franks suggested that the FBI and North Port Police likely had additional information that is not being shared publicly that has kept their investigative efforts focused on the nature preserve.

First — cadaver dogs. Now — a training exercise.

The authorities return to the swamp yet again to search for Brian Laundrie; this time to conduct ‘training exercises’ in the area.

Former FBI agent Dennis Franks explains what these exercises mean for the case of Gabby Petito.

TikTok journalist compares Brian Laundrie’s social media activity to 2011 mass shooter

Saturday 16 October 2021 08:40 , Celine Wadhera

“Let’s talk about Brian’s more and more alarming Instagram activity in the days that led to Petito’s death and how we can look at other instances of violence where their social media activity also became erratic and straight up strange,” California-based journalist Danielle Radin said on TikTok.

In a TikTok video, Ms Radin examines Mr Laundrie’s Instagram captions from his posts on 13 August, which she describes as “rants”, and notes their differences from his previous posts which had only brief captions.

“This kind of behaviour can be disturbing when violence happens, like it has here,” she said.

She then proceeds to compare Mr Laundrie’s social media activity prior to Gabby’s disappearance to that of Jared Loughner, who plead guilty to 19 charges of murder and attempted murder in connection with a mass shooting in Tucson, Arizona in 2011.

“This is a pattern. Time and time again when we see people commit unthinkable acts of violence. There tends to be a switch in their online and social media presence that gets more and more erratic and angry.”

‘She’s living her dream at 22’: Never-before seen interview with Gabby Petito’s parents

Saturday 16 October 2021 07:40 , Celine Wadhera

Video footage from 14 September has surfaced of Joseph and Tara Petito – Gabby’s father and stepmother – speaking with WFLA reporter Justin Schecker.

The interview was four days after Gabby had been declared a missing person, and five days before her body was discovered in Wyoming; it was clear that the Petitos were proud of their daughter and eager for her return home.

“She’s living her dream at 22,” Mr Petito said.

Ms Petito added: “I was proud of her ability to be able to travel across the country.

“She was an amazing, amazing artist … I brag to everyone about how amazing of an artist she is. It’s really about trying to find her and bring her home so she can continue that beauty.”

While the couple said that they had their concerns about her travelling the country at such a young age, it was clear that they were proud that she was living her life to the fullest.

“She’s amazing, and we’ve got to do what we can to get her home,” Mr Petito added.

“She’s living her dream at 22.” #GabbyPetito‘s parents are in Wyoming where their daughter’s cross country road trip came to a tragic end. In this never before seen clip from an interview on 9/14, Joseph and Tara Petito spoke of her love for travel. @WFLA

Friday 15 October 2021 23:01 , Graeme Massie

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis says he hopes fugitive Brian Laundrie is “apprehended and brought to justice” if officials charge him with Gabby Petito’s murder.

Mr DeSantis made his comments came after a press conference in North Port, Florida, where Brian Laundrie returned to see his parents in the wake of Ms Petito’s disappearance.

“You know, my view would be: it’s a little disappointing that we still don’t have this guy’s whereabouts,” said Mr DeSantis.

Media coverage of Gabby Petito’s case likely held authorities’s quick location of her body

Friday 15 October 2021 22:00 , Graig Graziosi

Teton County Coroner Dr Brent Blue chastised the media for not covering the cases of other domestic violence victims to the degree they covered Gabby Petito’s disappearance and death.

The Independent’s Andrew Buncombe argues that while the coroner is correct, it was the very media frenzy he was criticising that likely aided authorities in their quick location of Ms Petito’s body.

Friday 15 October 2021 18:33 , Graig Graziosi

Duane Chapman, aka Dog the Bounty Hunter, told The Sun that he wanted to try to talk to Chris Laundrie – Brian Laundrie’s father – to work his “heartstrings” to coax information about his son’s location out of him.

He also claimed he was going to try to reassure the father by saying he did not intend to kill his son.

“And sometimes that’s what I was going to tell him. I will not kill your son, I will let him, you know, make a phone call. I won’t talk to him,” Mr Chapman said.

The former reality TV star was briefly planning to leave the search to nurse an injured ankle, but scrapped those plans after a slew of headlines claimed he was “quitting” the search.

The attorney representing Brian Laundrie, Steven Bertolino, swiped at “true crime” TV stars Duane Chapman – aka Dog the Bounty Hunter – and John Walsh, creator of “America’s Most Wanted.”

Mr Chapman has publicly opined that Mr Laundrie could be a serial killer based on the fact that he enjoys media with dark content. Mr Walsh has also made Mr Laundrie the center of his public theorising, claiming recently that the man – with the help of his father – escaped to Mexico. Mr Laundrie has not been charged in Ms Petito’s death, a point his lawyer stressed after calling Mr Chapman and Mr Walsh “dusty relics” who are exploiting Ms Petito’s death for their own “egos.”

Strangulation is a lesser-known sign of intimate partner violence, say experts

Friday 15 October 2021 12:10 , Eleanor Sly

The autopsy of Gabby Petito’s body revealed that she had been strangled, with a cause of death being officially listed as “manual strangulation/throttling.” This is, according to experts, a “very typically the cause of death in domestic violence cases.”

Kellie Lynch, an associate professor at the University of Texas at San Antonio explained: “Strangulation is not talked about as much, but it is a major risk factor for intimate partner homicide.”

Speaking on Good Morning America she revealed: “We often see it occur alongside more severe abuse.”

“When you’re talking about strangulation, that is very typically the cause of death in domestic violence cases,” said Dan Abrams, ABC News chief legal analyst, during an interview on Wednesday on GMA.

He explained: “It is angry. It is violent. It takes time. That is precisely what many believe happened here.”

On Tuesday, the attorney told WPTV: “We’re moving towards filing charges but prosecutors are in no rush to file charges because once you file those charges, you have speedy trial rules and you have to try the case within 180 days.

“Prosecutors are going to make sure they have enough evidence before they file charges.”
