Bootsy Collins releases remix of iconic Bengals music video ahead of playoff game

The Bengals are gearing up to face off the Tennessee Titans in the divisional round of the NFL playoffs and Cincinnati’s funk legend, Booty Collins, released an updated version of his “Fear Da Tiger” music video to celebrate.

Seventy-two hours before kickoff, the irrepressible Bootsy got his creative juices flowing, his game face already on, updating “Fear Da Tiger” from the 2005 season with a series of video shoots that started yesterday at Fretboard Brewery in Blue Ash.

On Wednesday night, there were some additional shoots at his studio east of Cincinnati as he worked to tighten it up for taking on Tennessee. At least, that’s the midweek groove fans are in.

And Bootsy is a fan, there’s no Who Dey about it.

“The Bengals have just put out a vibe, you know, that hey, you know, we’re here,” he said during an interview at his home.

His white coat was highlighted with orange and black decorative markings and a Bengal tiger adorned his top hat.

Collins explained the genesis for the 2022 version of “Fear Da Tiger.”

“It’s like, hey, what about them Bengals? Let’s do, let’s do something, you know? Next thing you know, you know we in it,” he said.

He was not the only one with a mojo going. Ickey Woods shuffled in to be a part of this new music video for an orange and black Music City invasion.

“I bought this big B,” he explained pointing to a Bengals symbol that was hung with a bold, black chainlike lanyard.

“Since I’ve worn it, they’ve won,” Woods said.

He’ll wear it Saturday for the divisional playoff battle with the Titans. If you’re not amped up about all this yet, you might want to check your pulse.

Woods had this to say about breaking out his shuffle for last Saturday’s game.

“It was fun, man. You know, just to get the crowd pumped up. And, you know, before the game, get everybody goin’. And then when Uzomah scored his touchdown and, you know, attribute that to me, man, was awesome. You know, just made me feel so good inside that, you know, we got this winning ball club and they hadn’t forgot about the old guy.”

He busted out laughing as he said it.

While the Ben-Gals brought their energy to the beat, I wondered if Bootsy ever played football before playing bass and picking up a Grammy.

“You know, it’s like once I got, you know, hurt a couple times, I was like I’m gonna find somethin’ else to do,” he laughed at the memory. “This ain’t no joke.”

Bootsy called this a joyful time for Cincinnati, reflecting that in multiple takes of a Who Dey anthem, which he described as a blast with its camera angles, floor markers, lighting, and multiple retakes.

“Alright, let’s get this on tape,” he bellowed with enthusiasm after a couple of run-throughs with the crew.

If you’re wondering what he’ll wear to the game, he offered, “I don’t never think about it until, you know, time to go. It’s like bang, let’s do it.”

Which sounded just about right for the video, the fans, the team, the community, and the game.
