Bowel cancer: Know How 5 Cups Of Coffee Can Slash Your Risk
According to experts, even though it is common across the world, usually signs and symptoms like unexplained weight loss and stomach pain often do not appear in the early stages, making it difficult to diagnose early.
Doctors say anyone can develop stomach cancer, but certain demographic factors increase your risk, which include:
- You are 65 years of age or older
- You are a male
- Your ethnic background is East Asian, South or Central American, or Eastern European
Signs and symptoms of stomach cancer
Experts say there are no typical symptoms during the early stages, however, a few signs include:
- Loss of appetite
- Trouble swallowing
- Fatigue or weakness
- Nausea and vomiting
- Unexplained weight loss
- Indigestion
- Black stool
- Vomiting blood
- Stomach pain, often above your belly button
- Feeling full even after eating a small meal
What causes stomach cancer?
Stomach cancer happens due to genetic mutation in the DNA of your stomach cells, because of which the cells begin to grow rapidly and eventually form a tumour instead of dying.
These cancer cells then overtake healthy cells and spread to other parts of your body.
Even though researchers still do not know what causes the mutation, certain factors that seem to increase the likelihood of developing stomach cancer, include:
- Family history
- Obesity
- Helicobacter pylori infection
- Gastroesophageal reflux disease
- Gastritis
- Epstein-Barr virus infection.
- History of stomach ulcers
- A diet high in fatty, salty, smoked, or pickled foods.
- Frequent exposure to substances like coal, metal, and rubber.
- Smoking
- Drinking too much alcohol
Ways to treat
Doctors say treatment for stomach cancer depends on how far it has spread. It mostly involves a few options like:
Surgery
Surgery is usually conducted to remove precancerous cells – a tumour, or all or part of your stomach.
Endoscopy
If you are diagnosed with stomach cancer in the early stages, when it is limited to your stomach’s uppermost layers, it can be removed through an upper endoscopy – a procedure in which the tumour is cut from your stomach wall and removed.
Gastrectomy
Once the tumor spreads beyond your stomach’s superficial layers, you will require surgery to remove all or part of your stomach. Subtotal gastrectomy removes the part of your stomach affected by the cancer.
Chemotherapy
This method uses drugs to shrink cancer cells, making them easier to remove before surgery. Chemotherapy can also kill the remaining cancer cells after surgery.
