It’s a frightening prospect for the Maroons, but NSW lock Cameron Murray says the Blues can go to another level in Game Two of the State of Origin series in Brisbane.

After a record breaking 50-6 win in the series opener in Townsville it is hard to imagine how NSW could up the ante but Murray insists the Blues coaching staff have pinpointed key areas where the team can improve.

The Blues have won just two of the last 14 Origin clashes at Queensland’s spiritual home.

Only two of the Blues squad that will likely be selected for the clash on Sunday week have won an Origin game at Suncorp Stadium – James Tedesco and Jake Trbojevic. That was back in the opening game of the 2017 series when NSW won 28-4 before going on to lose the series 2-1.

The Blues kept their foot on the throat of the Maroons in Game One but there was a short period before half-time where Queensland did threaten to get back into it. Murray said there would be no let-up at Suncorp.

“I think we can get better,” Murray said after starring in the Rabbitohs’ big 46-0 win over the Broncos at Suncorp Stadium.

“There are always areas to improve and the NSW coaching staff have pinpointed a few areas that we can improve from a team perspective. We will have a great week in camp and hopefully we can be successful with that.

“While I really enjoyed that first game we have still got two more to go. It is going to be a massive ask up here at Suncorp and that will present new challenges for us.

“We know we haven’t got a great record here at Suncorp as well, so it is going to be a tough game.”

The three NSW representatives in the Rabbitohs outfit – Murray, Latrell Mitchell and Damien Cook – will enter Origin camp on a high and in winning club form.

Murray said Mitchell, who backed up from Origin I against the Knights and Broncos with class and grit, had also taken his game to the next level this season.

“Latrell has really stepped up. He is a leader now and the boys really rely on him to lead the team from the front with his strong performances,” Murray said.

“He has been a great leader for us at Souths, like last week when he stepped up after Origin against the Knights and didn’t want to let any of the boys down.

“It was a short turn around again and he has done the job against Brisbane. Hopefully he pulls up OK for Origin.

“He is just playing with a lot of confidence and is enjoying his footy. He is having fun. When you are in a good space off the field you are playing well on it and that is where he is at right now. His performances in the Origin arena are a reflection of that so hopefully we can build off that.”

Murray picked up a shoulder injury against the Maroons and sat out the Knights game but he said he was “all good” now. His form against Brisbane was top shelf and Souths coach Wayne Bennett said he would enter Origin camp at the peak of his powers.

“He was really good tonight, he enjoyed being out there and wanted to be out there,” Bennett said.

“He did some really good work, whether he was passing short to Tom [Burgess], passing to Cody [Walker] or passing out the back … and he is a running option as well. That makes him very lethal.”

The Rabbitohs were also lethal against Brisbane, and for reasons other than just their attacking brilliance.

“For the last couple of games we have been focusing on having a defensive mindset and earning the right to attack with our defence,” Murray said.

“That is where our focus has been and the most pleasing thing to come out of our last couple of games.”
