(CNN) — Antony Blinken reafirmó el apoyo de Estados Unidos a la soberanía de Guyana en una llamada telefónica este miércoles al presidente de Guyana, Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali, según un comunicado del Departamento de Estado.

El presidente de Venezuela ordenó este martes la creación de un nuevo estado llamado “Guayana Esequiba”, luego de un controvertido referéndum dominical en el que los votantes venezolanos aprobaron la anexión de tierras de la vecina Guyana.

El área en cuestión, la región de Esequibo, densamente boscosa y rica en petróleo, representa alrededor de dos tercios del territorio nacional de Guyana. Venezuela ha reclamado durante mucho tiempo la tierra y desestimó un fallo de 1899 de árbitros internacionales que establecían los límites actuales.

En la convocatoria, Blinken pidió una “resolución pacífica de la disputa” y que ambos “respeten el laudo arbitral de 1899” que estableció los límites actuales de la región, dijo en el comunicado el portavoz del Departamento de Estado, Matt Miller.

El secretario Blinken y el presidente Ali tomaron nota de una orden del 1 de diciembre de la Corte Internacional de Justicia, en la que se pedía a las partes que se abstuvieran de realizar acciones que pudieran agravar la situación, según el comunicado.

Cancilleres de Venezuela y Guyana mantienen conversación telefónica

Los ministros de Relaciones Exteriores de Venezuela y Guyana sostuvieron este miércoles una llamada telefónica donde abordaron la actual disputa territorial que involucra a la región del Esequibo, según declaraciones de ambos ministerios.

El ministro de Asuntos Exteriores de Venezuela, Yvan Gil, dijo a su homólogo que los resultados del referéndum de este domingo, en el que los votantes aprobaron la anexión de esa parte del territorio de Guyana, constituyen un “mandato irrevocable” para su gobierno y una solución a la disputa territorial.

El ministro de Guyana, Hugh Hilton Todd, “expresó preocupación” por las más recientes acciones de Caracas que “violaron directamente la Orden de la Corte Internacional de Justicia del 1 de diciembre de 2023”.

El ministro Todd también dijo que Guyana continuaría buscando la resolución de este asunto a través de la Corte Internacional de Justicia, según un comunicado emitido por el Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores del país.

El comunicado del Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores de Venezuela también dijo que ambas partes acordaron mantener “canales de comunicación abiertos”.
