Dwight Ramos likes bigger Gilas roster

MANILA, Philippines: Filipino-American wingman Dwight Ramos believes the latest Gilas iteration that will have a solid core of 12 players is a “good idea” given the chemistry it will build over the next four years under national coach Tim Cone.

Named to the 12-man roster by Cone weeks back, the 25-year-old Ramos said he’s excited to be part of the squad that will be making its FIBA Asia Cup Qualifiers 2025 debut on Thursday against Hong Kong.

“It feels good (to be in the team). It’s a good idea to keep everybody the same. Of course, things come like if someone gets hurt, they gotta need to find a replacement but mostly, it’s the same players every time,” said Ramos during last Monday’s press conference at the Philsports Arena.

“It’s gonna help you to build window to window and the chemistry will always be there. I think it’s a good idea. We’re gonna make it work the next four years.”

The 6-foot-4 Ramos will be playing for his third Gilas coach since Tab Baldwin during the 2020 FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Belgrade, Serbia and the 2021 FIBA Asia Cup Qualifiers.

He also saw action under Chot Reyes in the 2023 FIBA Asia Cup Qualifiers, along with the FIBA World Cup in Manila.

With Tim Cone now at the helm, Ramos sees a lot of upside on the team given its size and emphasis on ball movement.

“It’s just different (from other Gilas teams) but I like how it is. I’ll just try to join and learn as much as I could,” he said. “It’s easy (transition under Cone) because they all help me out really.”

Ramos is coming off an impressive FIBA World Cup performance last year that saw him average 13.2 points, 5.6 rebounds and 2.4 rebounds where the team battled the Dominican Republic, Italy and Angola in the opening round.
