After years of efforts to develop the semiconductors industry, India has taken a big leap with Tata Electronics exporting semiconductors to other countries marking an endeavour to bolster India’s semiconductor industry. The company exports semiconductor chips packaged at its Bengaluru R&D centre.
Exporting Packaged Semiconductor Chips
Tata Electronics has commenced exporting limited quantities of semiconductor chips packaged at its Bengaluru R&D centre to partners in Japan, the US, and Europe. This move precedes the establishment of a new chip packaging unit in Assam and a USD 10 billion chip foundry in Gujarat. These packaged chips, are currently in the pilot stage, according to an ET Report.
The company is on the verge of achieving a successful tape-out of semiconductor chips in various nodes, including 28, 40, 55, and 65 nanometers. Tape-out, the final stage of the design process, as per the report.

Strategic Partnerships and Collaborations
Tata Electronics’ strategic partnership with Tesla, aimed at supplying semiconductor chips for global operations, underscores the company’s growing influence in the semiconductor domain. Additionally, collaborations with renowned market players such as Renesas and Lattice Semi through Tata Elxsi and Sankhya Labs further enhance Tata’s technological prowess and market reach.

Expansion Plans and Government Support
Tata’s chip foundry in Dholera, in collaboration with Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (PSMC), is poised to be a major player in producing chips across leading and legacy nodes. Additionally, plans for an outsourced assembly and testing (OSAT) unit in Assam underscore Tata’s comprehensive approach to semiconductor manufacturing. Other players in the industry, such as CG Power and Hiranandani Group’s Tarq Semiconductors, are also making strides with government support.
