In what has come as a huge blow for the Rajasthan Royals, Jos Buttler will be unavailable for the IPL 2024 playoffs as all England players will return back for their T20I series against Pakistan ahead of the T20 World Cup in June. England Cricket, while announcing their preliminary squad for the marquee event, mentioned that all selected players will return in time for the Pakistan series.

A notable inclusion in England’s T20 World Cup squad is of ace pacer Jofra Archer. His last appearance for England dates back to May last year and since then, he has been on the road to recovery from an elbow injury that sidelined him for almost a year.

The path back has not been easy for Archer, since the last three years, he has encountered several obstacles, including stress fractures, persistent elbow problems and even surgery because of a freak fish tank accident.

Despite his recent absence from the England line-up, experienced all-rounder Chris Jordan secured his spot in the team, his last international appearance dating back to September last year. His inclusion and subsequent omission of Chris Woakes are the surprises in Buttler’s team, charged with defending their title.

Jordan is a brilliant fielder and a good option at the death as well. Among the batters, Buttler will lead the defending champions with Will Jacks, Phil Salt and Jonny Bairstow among the top-order contenders. Southpaw Ben Duckett has also been included in the squad, besides veteran allrounder Moeen Ali.

Harry Brook, Liam Livingstone and Sam Curran will give the much-needed firepower in the lower order while Adil Rashid will be the lead spinner besides Tom Hartley. The latter, who shot to prominence earlier this year with 22 wickets against India in his maiden Test series, has been handed the second frontline spinner’s berth ahead of Rehan Ahmed.

The same team has been selected for the four-match T20I series against Pakistan. All the players who are part of IPL 2024 will return in time for the T20I series against Babar Azam’s men. England will fly to the Caribbean on May 31 ahead of their first match against Scotland in Barbados on June 4.

England are drawn in Group B at the marquee event besides Australia, Namibia, Scotland and Oman.
