The Premier League has slipped behind in the race to secure an extra Champions League place following Thursday night’s results across Europe.

Aston Villa were the only English club to register a win in European competition this week as they beat Lille in the Europa Conference League, while in the Europa League, Liverpool slumped to a 3-0 loss at home to Atalanta, while West Ham fell to a 2-0 defeat away to Bayer Leverkusen.

Germany’s score was given a slight boost with Leverkusen’s win and with Italy holding firm at the top of the UEFA coefficient table, the race for second spot is still tight between the Premier League clubs and Bundesliga teams.

How does it work?

For the 2024/25 Champions League campaign, there will be an expanded tournament with 36 teams. That is four more than currently, with two of those places to be filled ‘European Performance Spots’.

Places will be assigned to the associations with the best collective performance – classed as their coefficient – by their clubs in Europe this season. For the Premier League, who already get four Champions League spots, that would mean fifth place also qualifies.

Wins are rewarded with two coefficient points and a draw is worth one point, with nothing for a defeat, while there are also bonus points for participation at various stages of the competitions. The tally is then divided by the number of clubs an association has competing in Europe to create a coefficient average.

The UEFA coefficient table…

Following the Europa League and Europa Conference League results on March 14, UEFA’s coefficient table now looks like this…

  1. Italy: 18.714
  2. Germany: 16.928
  3. England: 16.875
  4. Spain: 15.062
  5. France: 14.750

Germany’s hopes of securing second spot were given a major boost with Bayer Leverkusen’s 2-0 win against West Ham on Thursday. Bayern Munich are still in with a good chance of progressing past Arsenal in the Champions League, while Borussia Dortmund need to overturn their first leg defeat to Atletico Madrid.

A small gap opened up after Thursday’s results in Europe with both Liverpool and West Ham getting beat.

Aston Villa are in a commanding position in the Europa Conference League with their 2-1 win at home to Lille, while in the Champions League, Arsenal and Manchester City’s ties could still go either way.
