There’s plenty to love about Telstra’s offerings – while its plans are often the most expensive among the major providers, Telstra’s impressive coverage can be worth the somewhat steeper price of entry, particularly if you’re living in a regional or remote area.
We’ll be taking a look at various phones on this page, and seeing how they stack up on the Telstra network. If you’d like, you can jump ahead to our plan recommendations below:

Noteworthy Telstra deals
Before we get stuck into our phone and plan recommendations, you should know about Telstra’s current high-data deal:
- Telstra Extra Large plan: 180GB for AU$65p/m (first 12 months, then AU$115p/m)
Best SIM-only option
Telstra Small plan | 40GB data | AU$55p/m
Telstra tends to have the most expensive mobile plans among the three major telcos, but it does have the widest-reaching network in Australia, which will be essential for some. If you’re set on signing up, we’d recommend Telstra’s cheapest plan as the best overall, which gets you 40GB of data for AU$55 a month. It doesn’t come with access to Telstra’s 5G network though, so if you’re keen on that, you’ll need to move up to a Medium plan which comes with 80GB for AU$65 a month.
Total minimum cost is AU$55

Best overall iPhone + plan combo: our pick
iPhone 13 (128GB) | 180GB data | 24 months | AU$121.20p/m (first 12 months, then AU$171.20p/m)
If it’s the all-new iPhone 13 you’ve got your eyes on, then we reckon Telstra’s Extra Large 180GB plan is the way to go. That’s because this high-data plan is now discounted down to AU$65 a month for your first 12 months, after which it reverts back to its standard pricing of AU$115p/m. That will initially see you pay AU$121.20 each billing, and if you want to avoid the price hike after your first year, you can always move down to a cheaper plan.
Total cost over 24 months is AU$3,508.80
Best overall Android + plan combo: our pick
Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra (128GB) | 180GB data | 24 months | AU$129.50p/m (first 12 months, then AU$179.50p/m)
The super-sleek Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra really is as good as it looks. If you’d like to pick it up from Telstra, we’d suggest pairing it with the Extra Large plan on a 24-month contract. That’s because this 180GB plan is currently discounted down to AU$65 a month for your first 12 months, which is significantly less than its usual price of AU$115p/m. Your plan will revert back to its standard cost after the first year, but you’re free to move down to a cheaper plan at any time. The Samsung Galaxy S21 is our second pick if the S21 Ultra is too big (or too dear) for you.
Total cost over 24 months is AU$3,708

Best cheap iPhone + plan combo: our pick
iPhone SE (64GB) | 40GB data | 24 months | AU$83.29p/m
Telstra has matched Apple’s reduced price on the iPhone SE, so you’ll be paying just AU$679 in total for the handset. For a cheap plan, we’d recommend pairing Telstra’s AU$55 Small plan with a 64GB iPhone SE in black, red or white. You’ll get 40GB of data to play with each month and unlimited talk and text to standard numbers in Australia.
Total cost over 24 months is AU$1,998.96
Best cheap Android phone + plan combo: our pick
Samsung Galaxy S20 FE (128GB) | 40GB data | 24 months | AU$92.45p/m
There are cheaper Android options out there, but the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE strikes the right balance between great features and affordability. We’d suggest pairing it with Telstra’s AU$55 Small plan, which will get you 40GB of data and cost AU$92.45p/m on a 24-month contract. Telstra’s cheapest plan doesn’t come with 5G access, though you can always go up to a AU$65 Medium plan if you want 5G speeds – it’ll cost you slightly more at AU$102.45p/m.
Total cost over 24 months is AU$2,218.80

iPhone 13 Pro Max (128GB) | 180GB data | 24 months | AU$142.04p/m (first 12 months, then AU$192.04p/m)
The iPhone 13 Pro Max is the biggest and best iPhone you can buy, so if you’re looking at Apple’s most premium device, this plan offers a huge amount of data to go with it. Match the handset with Telstra’s Extra Large plan, and you’ll pay AU$142.04 a month for 180GB of data. That price only lasts for your first 12 months though, after which it’ll revert back to standard pricing, and you’ll pay AU$192.04 a month (though you can easily move down to a lower data plan to swerve the price hike).
Total cost over 24 months is AU$4,008.96
Best premium Android + plan combo: our pick
Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 (128GB) | 180GB data | 24 months | AU$127.45p/m (first 12 months, then AU$177.45p/m)
The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 is a modern take on a nostalgic favourite – the flip phone. If you want a premium plan, we’d suggest pairing it with Telstra’s Extra Large plan, which has been sliced down to AU$65 a month for your first 12 months. After the welcome discount, your plan fees will increase to the standard price of AU$115 a month, but it’s easy to skip this price increase by moving down to a cheaper option. The Extra Large plan comes with 180GB of data each month, so you’ll have plenty to burn through.
Total cost over 24 months is AU$3,658.80
