Besides shaadi shopping, here are 5 things that you can do in Chandni Chowk
As someone who is not from Delhi, initially, my idea about Chandni Chowk was just limited to the fact that it is a shaadi shopping haven. But in reality, it is so much more than just a destination to source your wedding clothes and jewellery. It may tickle your fancy to know that besides being a coveted shopping destination, Chandni Chowk also houses Asia’s biggest spice market. Now, did you know that? Well, there is so much you can do and it is from my personal experience that I can tell you, one day is not enough to explore this gem. Every bylane, every shop and every man you see here has an incredible story to tell.
Let me warn you in advance, besides being one of the oldest markets in the country, it is also known for its overtly crowded streets. Therefore, be prepared in advance. Most shops will not entertain cards or other means of online transactions (only if you pester them a little, they might), so, keep your cash handy. Last, but not least, it is recommended you wear the most comfortable pair of shoes for your tour. Heels are a big no, no.
Now, without any further ado, let’s revisit the bylanes of Chandni Chowk as you have never done. I bet you are not going to regret it.
LET’S DO SOME ITTAR SHOPPING
If you love collecting perfumes, Chandni Chowk is the place to be. You will find numerous shops selling ittar. The scent or essential oil in the ittar is majorly extracted from a botanical plant. Contrary to most perfumes, the scent stays longer. From mogra to oud, the shops boast an array of scents. Some even claim they have dupes for Versace and Gucci perfumes. You can lay your hands on these miniature bottles for a price as low as Rs 50. The collection varies from shop to shop, so, it is recommended you do your research first before zeroing on one (or you could go on an ittar shopping spree as well). Some shops also customise ittar according to your preference. I visited Mehboob Perfumery Works situated in the lane opposite Jama Masjid.

GET YOUR HANDS ON SOME JHUMKAS
Now, everyone reading this, the shop I am going to mention here was one of my longest-kept secrets. I have sourced some magnificent oxidised necklaces and jhumaks from this little shop located in Dariba Kalan. It is called Lajawab Handicrafts. This place has some affordable yet statement pieces and if you love oxidised jewellery, this is the place to be. Thank me later.

VISIT KHARI BAOLI, ASIA’S LARGEST SPICE MARKET
Name any Indian spice and without a doubt, you are going to find it in Khari Baoli. It is Asia’s largest wholesale spice market, selling a variety of spices, nuts, herbs and food products like rice and tea. If you can stomach the overcrowded street and the hint of chilli powder in the air, this place is a must-visit for anyone who loves cooking. Here’s everything that you could think of for your pantry. Pinenuts from Afghanistan to almonds from California, this place is every chef’s dream. In all probability, you will find items at a cheaper rate than in your departmental store. Isn’t that wonderful?

COIN COLLECTING
If you are a numismatist, this section might be of utmost interest. While scouting through the lanes of Chandni Chowk, you will stumble upon numerous men sitting on their chairs with a basket full of coins which are allegedly from different countries and eras. Why allegedly, you ask? Well, because I am a little sceptical about the authenticity of all the coins. But on the brighter side, these shopkeepers have great stories to tell. You might want to make a pit stop at one of these shops.

MIRZA GHALIB KI HAVELI FOR THE SHAYAR IN YOU
Channelise the poet in you; visit the one and only Mirza Ghalib’s abode which is situated in Chandni Chowk’s Balli Maran. There isn’t much to do here, but this is the place to be if you are a connoisseur of Ghalib or good poetry for that matter. To be able to breathe the same air that he did, to be able to walk through the corridors of the house in which he resided, it is sure to take you back in time.
In the year of 1999, the Government of Delhi acquired a portion of the haveli and converted the same into a museum.
I want to leave you behind with a quote by Mirza Ghalib which will perhaps pump you up to visit these gems in Chandni Chowk.
“Manzil milegi bhatak kar hi sahi. Gumraah toh woh hain jo ghar se nile hi nahi.”
