Berlin: German climate activists spray-painted Berlin’s iconic Brandenburg Gate on Sunday morning. Climate activists sprayed orange paint onto the monument to get the German government to take urgent climate action.

As per reports, members of the Last Generation group used fire extinguishers filled with paint to spray orange onto all six pillars of the famous landmark.

The group has demanded that the German government halt the use of fossil fuels by 2030 and take short-term measures to cut emissions more quickly. One of these measures is to impose a speed limit of 100 kilometres per hour on highways.

“The protest makes it clear: It is time for a political change. Away from fossil fuels — towards fairness,” read the official statement issued by the group.

Currently, police have detained around 14 activities affiliated with the group. The area surrounding Brandenburg Gate has also been sealed off.

The climate action group – Last Generation – is best known for glueing themselves onto the roads and blocking traffic in order to get their message of urgent climate action across.

Berlin’s mayor Kai Wegner has condemned the vandalism and said the group has gone beyond the “legitimate forms of protest”.

“With these actions, this group is not only damaging the historic Brandenburg Gate but also our free discourse about the important issues of our time and future,” the Berlin Mayor told local media.
