Awkward! Man Utd's new CEO mocked club in series of resurfaced tweets

Manchester United’s newly appointed chief executive Omar Berrada may want to delete some of his old tweets after a string of posts mocking his new club resurfaced online.

The Spaniard has been handed the reins at Old Trafford after being identified by Ineos as the ideal successor to Richard Arnold, who stepped down as CEO at the backend of last year.

Berrada has been a key part of the hierarchy at City since 2011, having previously been employed by Barcelona, and was initially brought in to head up the commercial department.

He rose up through the ranks over the years and was chief football operations officer at City Football Group – overseeing a host of clubs, not just the Premier League champions – until handing in his resignation to take over at United.

An official statement confirmed the appointment on Saturday evening, saying: ‘The club is determined to put football and performance on the pitch back at the heart of everything we do. Omar’s appointment represents the first step on this journey.’

Berrada’s expertise in both on-pitch and off-pitch matters is seen as a huge benefit to United, while he played a key role in signing Erling Haaland in 2022 and helped make City’s academy one of the best in the world.

According to BBC Sport, Berrada will not start his new role until the summer, with Patrick Stewart continuing to act as interim CEO until then.

When Berrada does walk through the doors at Carrington for the first time, he might want to clear out some of his old tweets first with a number of historic posts on X – the social media platform formerly known as Twitter – coming to light following news of his appointment.

In one of the tweets, Berrada was willing United to lose in a clash against Chelsea, while another saw him critiquing the Red Devils for becoming a ‘mess’.

Writing on February 5, 2012, Berrada said: ‘Stuck at the airport ’cause of snow delays. Killing time watching Man United vs Chelsea on my iPad via Sky go. And hoping for a ManU loss…’

United would end up coming from behind to draw the match 3-3, but when Chelsea took a two-goal lead after Fernando Torres set up Juan Mata he tweeted: ‘Goal! Chelsea 2-0 Manchester United. Oh yeah! Viva la Spanish Connection!’

A year later he decided to rewatch United’s classic Champions League final victory over Bayern Munich at Camp Nou in 1999 and was rather scathing about the performance of Sir Alex Ferguson’s side.

‘Watching the Man Utd vs Bayern 1999 UCL final on ESPN Classic,’ he wrote. ‘I had forgotten how much Bayern really deserved to win that match.’

In April 2014, he also shared an article from The Guardian which criticised the running of the club on and off the pitch, tweeting ‘how did they get into this mess?’; not long after, David Moyes was relieved of his duties.

Berrada has been a far less prolific tweeter in recent years, predominantly retweeting and sharing posts from the Manchester City account and praising the club’s many achievements.
