cannabis plants worth £200k found in empty building

The plants were recovered by police for destruction

Cannabis plants worth more than £200k have been seized in a disused building in Leicestershire.

Leicestershire Police discovered the plants at a location in Station Road, Glenfield, on Monday.

The plants are estimated to have a potential street value of £228,000, police said.

Two men, aged 19 and 29, were caught trying to escape via the roof and were then arrested on suspicion of cultivating cannabis.

The amount of cables used to power the unit

Police said the National Grid attended the location, which is next to a petrol station, to isolate the power to the unit, as the “risk of fire from the dodgy electrics were a potential recipe for disaster”.

The 19-year-old has since been charged with cultivating and producing cannabis alongside the 29-year-old, who was also charged with producing cannabis.

The pair appeared at Leicester Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday and will next appear at the city’s crown court in April.
