BBC Strictly Come Dancing 2022 star Tony Adams' life from brilliant football career to his battle to quit booze

Tony Adams has signed up to take part in the Strictly Come Dancing 2022 series. The football star, 55, joins the likes of Will Mellor, Kaye Adams, Ellie Simmonds and many more, who will be taking to the ballroom dance floor in hopes of impressing the judges and viewers at home for a chance at lifting the coveted Glitterball trophy.

Tony Adams MBE has said that he is looking forward to meeting his partner and finally start dancing. “To say I’m excited is an understatement – the lure of the sequins and the call of the salsa has me swapping my battered old football boots for a set of Strictly soft shoes.”

He added: “Am absolutely thrilled to be giving it my all on this year’s 20th anniversary of Strictly Come Dancing. I can’t wait to meet my partner – god help her – and start the dancing.”

He is a football legend

The footballer’s career on the pitch spanned over 22 years and he is regarded as one of Arsenal’s greatest ever players and one of the all-time greats of English football.

Although Tony made headlines with his impressive wins all the while making a name for himself in the sporting industry, behind-closed-doors, his life was falling apart. It wasn’t all thrills and victories as sadly, Tony struggled with his alcohol addiction.

However, Tony has turned his life around after many years of battling his drinking addiction, and now, he regularly attends AA meetings. He previously said: “It’s not part of my being today, it’s not a thing. It’s been removed from me.

Tony is now a confirmed contestant on Strictly

“I still check in and go to regular AA meetings and keep it fresh, because we are human beings and we can forget. We’ve got ‘romantic recall’ they call it, when we think of only the good times.”

Last year, Tony marked 25 years of being sober and has been very honest about his battle with booze and addiction. Sharing this milestone with his social media followers he said: “There it is! Officially an old timer today. At 5pm on the 16/08/1996 I took my last alcoholic drink.

“25 years of peace and serenity later, I would just like to thank all those recovering addicts that freely carried the message of recovery to me.

The former England and Arsenal captain is now married to Poppy Teacher, a whisky heiress. They couple wed back in 2012, reported The Evening Standard at the time. Tony was previously married to his first wife Jane Shea.
