Bruins Defenseman Called Up From Providence

Defenseman Mason Lohrei has been called up from AHL Providence, the Boston Bruins announced Tuesday morning.

Forward Oskar Steen – who cleared waivers Monday – was assigned to Providence, and forward Matt Poitras was placed on long-term injured reserve after undergoing shoulder surgery on Feb. 7.

Lohrei’s call-up comes as the Bruins open a four-game road trip out West, starting with a tilt against the Edmonton Oilers Wednesday.

Lohrei has played 27 games with the Bruins this season and posted six points (three goals, three assists). His last NHL game was Jan. 18 against the Colorado Avalanche.

The 23-year-old could be coming in relief for Hampus Lindholm, who left Monday’s 4-3 shootout win over the Dallas Stars in the third period. Lindholm went down awkwardly in the corner after colliding with Stars forward Ty Dellandrea.

The veteran defenseman eventually went to the room after talking with trainers on the bench. Bruins coach Jim Montgomery said postgame that he didn’t have any updates on Lindholm’s condition and that they would know more Tuesday.

While the Bruins still have six defensemen without Lindholm – Parker Wotherspoon has remained on the roster while swapping third-pair positioning with Kevin Shattenkirk – Lohrei adds some depth and security as the team has a gauntlet of tough competition ahead of it.

Lohrei has played two games for Providence since returning from injury. The 6-foot-5 blueliner suffered a skate cut to his left leg during Feb. 3’s matchup against the Charlotte Checkers. His first game back was Friday, and he recorded an assist Sunday in Providence’s 3-0 win over the Hartford Wolf Pack.
