PITTSBURGH – A recent report from Pierre LeBrun indicated that the Pittsburgh Penguins have started listening to trade offers from just about everyone on the roster outside of the core. Penguins president and general manager Kyle Dubas spoke with the media and addressed the report.
While Dubas tried to note he doesn’t know the exact wording of LeBrun’s reporting, he did admit that teams have called.
“I had another GM mention it to me,” Dubas said. “We’ve received a lot of calls on a lot of our players. Especially as our team has been in the spot that it’s at.”
The Penguins currently sit eight points out of the second wild card spot in the Eastern Conference with only 29 games left to play. They have games in hand on a few teams, but haven’t had a great stretch.
Since returning from the All-Star break, the Penguins are 2-4-1 and 3-5-2 in their last 10 games played. It’s those piling losses that has spurred teams from across the NHL to give Dubas calls.
“Coming out of the All-Star break, we lose two of three,” Dubas said. “Last week is the same… Teams are calling more and more asking, ‘are they going to be available?’”
Dubas is remaining patient when it comes to making trades with this Penguins roster. He didn’t dig into details about who specifically was being called about, but noted it is his job to hear what others are bringing to the table.
No moves are likely to be made soon, but as March 8 closes in, the Penguins are likely sliding towards selling at least a couple of pieces, especially if teams make offers Dubas can’t refuse.
