With three films crossing Rs 50 crore, Mollywood wraps up February on a fabulous note
Two months into the year 2024, Malayalam cinema is off to a fabulous start and living up to the expectations of a robust year. The month of February was indeed fruitful for Mollywood with four solid releases, of which three entered the Rs 50 crore club in a matter of days!
February opened with two anticipated releases, ‘Anweshippin Kandethum’ and ‘Premalu’, both released on February 9. While Tovino Thomas’ ‘Anweshippin Kandethum’, directed by Darwin Kuriakose, won the likes of investigative thriller enthusiasts, Naslen-Mamitha starrer ‘Premalu’ grabbed the eyeballs of the young crowd and rom-com lovers.
‘Anweshippin Kandethum’ starring Tovino Thomas tells the story of a dedicated cop and his team facing a challenge with the potential to upend their careers and have to unravel the mystery behind two unrelated crimes. As our critic noted, “Darwin Kuriakose’s crime thriller skillfully employs deliberate pacing and thoughtful progression, intensifying the impact of its surprising twist. While ‘Anveshippin Kandethum’ offers a gripping narrative and compelling performances, it prompts reflection on the recurring theme of crimes against women in Malayalam cinema thrillers.”
Girish AD’s directorial ‘Premalu’, on the other hand, is a youthful entertainer that tells the story of Sachin, a jobless engineer, who falls in love with Reenu and his efforts to win her heart. Though the director, like his previous films, has a similar thread, the treatment is different every time, which makes ‘Premalu’ a refreshing entertainer. The rom-com entered the Rs 50 crore club on the 14th day of its release. What’s commendable is that, despite not being a star vehicle, the ‘Premalu’ film isn’t really a star vehicle.
A week later, on February 9, Mammootty starrer ‘Bramayugam’ hit theatres. The film helmed by Rahul Sadasivan was one of the most anticipated films of 2024, given that the director had earlier delivered the exceptional ‘Bhoothakaalam’. Mammootty left no stone unturned while playing Kodumon Potti or Chatahan. Mammootty achieved a remarkable feat through the film, as it grossed Rs 50 crore by the end of the 10th in the worldwide box office collection. The one-of-a-kind black-and-white film stands tall, both for its brilliant narrative and remarkable making. The performances, of course, are the fuel that drives the film forward.
Mollywood wrapped February with ‘Manjummel Boys’, which hit the big screens on February 22. Directed by Chidambaram and featuring Soubin Shahir, Lal, Sreenath Bhasi, Balu Varghese, and Ganapathy in key roles, it is based on the real-life incident of a group of friends going on a vacation, which takes an unexpected turn when one of them gets trapped inside the Guna cave. The survival thriller that earned the likes of Ulaganayagan Kamal Haasan himself minted Rs 50 crore by its 7th day! With no huge stars but only gifted and dedicated actors at its helm, the film’s success at the box office is a testament to the fact that nothing could stand in the way of a film’s success when the efforts and content are true.
