Babar Azam breaks elusive T20I record in Pakistan-New Zealand series final

NEW DELHI: In a historic feat, Pakistan’s captain, Babar Azam, etched his name in the annals of cricket history by breaking the record for the most number of fours in men’s T20I cricket.

His sublime innings of 69 runs off 44 balls during Pakistan’s thrilling victory over New Zealand in the fifth T20I showcased his batting prowess. With six exquisite boundaries to his credit, Babar surpassed Ireland’s Paul Stirling, amassing a total of 409 fours in just 107 innings, eclipsing Stirling’s record of 407 fours in 136 innings.

Babar and Stirling now stand as the only two players to have crossed the 400-mark in men’s T20I cricket.

India’s Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma closely trail the duo, with Kohli boasting 361 fours in 109 innings, followed by Rohit with 359 fours in 143 innings.

Babar’s contribution was pivotal in steering Pakistan to a competitive total of 178/5 on a challenging pitch.

In the second innings, Shaheen Shah Afridi’s exceptional bowling display rattled the New Zealand batting lineup. Afridi’s figures of 4/30 played a decisive role in shifting the momentum in Pakistan’s favor. His early breakthrough, dismissing Tom Blundell, set the tone for Pakistan’s defence.

Despite New Zealand’s efforts to stage a comeback, Shaheen’s consecutive strikes halted their progress. Unable to recover, the Blackcaps succumbed to a 7-run defeat, allowing Pakistan to level the five-match T20I series at 2-2.

Following the conclusion of the series against New Zealand, Pakistan are set to tour England for a four-match T20I series commencing on May 22, enhancing their preparations for the upcoming T20 World Cup.
