Ayr Gold Cup day is one of the biggest racing days in the Scottish calendar and we’ve picked out our best bets from the live ITV races on the Ayr card.
1.55 – Doonside Cup Stakes
Not much depth to this Listed race, with only four of the ten contenders officially rated north of 100, and it’s basically a match between the top two.
You can put a line through Euchen Glen’s Ebor run because he didn’t enjoy that longer trip but he didn’t have any excuses in the Rose Of Lancaster Stakes prior to that so it’s hard to have any real confidence that he’s at the top of his game right now.
That leaves the door open for JUAN ELCANO who was in too deep in the Juddmonte International, but his head second to Bangkok in a York Group 2 at the end of July marks him down as the one to beat here.
This is his trip, it’s his easiest assignment for some time and he won’t mind if the ground eases.

2.30 – AYR SILVER CUP
A really tough puzzle to solve. Blackrod is a progressive three-year-old that could still be ahead of the game and the return to six-furlongs looks nailed on to help, but he’s up against some hard-knocking handicappers.
The most appealing option is MAGICAL SPIRIT who bolted up in this race 12 months ago and he comes out of exactly the same stall (4) this time. Kevin Ryan’s charge ran easily his best race of the season at Ascot last time where he failed by a whisker to get up close home in a similarly competitive sprint handicap. Up just 1lb this time, he’s a huge player in a race that has probably been a long-term target.

3.05 – Firth Of Clyde Fillies’ Stakes
A competitive renewal. Market-leader Head Mistress has already posted a figure good enough to win most editions of this contest and this unexposed Irish challenger is open to plenty more improvement yet.
However, it was hard not to be extremely taken with the Chelmsford debut success off HALA HALA AATHMANI, who sprinted clear of a rival that had some useful maiden form in the book, and the exciting Kevin Ryan-trained filly might just be a cut above this level.

3.40 – AYR GOLD CUP
Races don’t come much tougher than this. As ever in these big-field sprints, it’s worth taking the draw element out of the equation by backing one on either side of the track.
Stewards’ Cup form can often be a good pointer to this race and although Commanche Falls came out on top that day, that might not have been the case had GREAT AMBASSADOR been drawn near the group that ended up dominated.
Ed Walker’s progressive sprinter was the only horse drawn on the far side of the track to hit the frame that day, drawing well clear of the others to stay on that side of Goodwood’s straight course. He readily saw off higher-rated rivals in a Listed sprint at York last time so is deserving of today’s inflated mark and providing stall 1 isn’t a hindrance, he looks sure to run a big race under Richard Kingscote.
Of those drawn high, BIELSA looks a solid contender at double-figure odds. He was only beaten three lengths in this race last year despite having to do his own donkey work towards the stands’ side and again ended up racing on his own when getting within two and three-quarter lengths of Commanche Falls in the Stewards’ Cup. He’s been threatening to win a prize like this for a while now and he represents a stable going great guns.
