un sabko khilane ka kya faida: rohit sharma fires massive dig at youngsters for picking ipl over test cricket
Rohit Sharma did not mince words while calling out youngster who are shying away from playing red-ball cricket and instead prioritizing playing white-ball cricket and the Indian Premier League (IPL) following India’s tense victory in the Ranchi Test over England, which confirmed their 17th successive victory on home soil in the longest format of the game.
With various senior players such as Virat Kohli (personal reasons), Mohammed Shami (injury), KL Rahul (injury), Rishabh Pant (injury), and Jasprit Bumrah (rested), the victory has come with young players such as Dhruv Jurel and Akash Deep shining for the team.
Alongside Jurel and Akash, Rajat Patidar and Sarfaraz Khan have also made their debuts for India in Test cricket this series, meaning a total of four debutants have played for India in this series. Following the victory, Rohit praised the youngsters for their commitment to red-ball cricket while slamming those who do not have the hunger to play the longest format of the game.
“Dekho, jinko Test Cricket ki bhook nahi hain, wo dekh ke hi pata chal jata hain. Un sabko khilane ka kya faida phir? (See, the one who doesn’t have hunger to play tests can be seen; what’s the meaning of playing them),” said Rohit in the post-match press conference.
“I don’t see anyone in the team here who is not hungry. All the boys who are here and also those who are not, they all want to play. But the thing with Test cricket is that you get very few opportunities. If you don’t utilise them, they go away,” Rohit added.
Rohit also made it clear players with hunger to play Test cricket will be given preference by the team mangement and explained that while IPL is a good thing for Indian cricket, the longest format is the hardest.
“IPL is a very good format for us, but this is the toughest format and difficult to excel. You have to work hard to win…the last three wins didn’t come easy, bowlers had to do long spell, batsmen had to grind it out. It’s tough,” Rohit said.
Are Indian Players Ignoring Red-Ball Cricket?
Rohit’s comment comes on the back of some major controversy in the last few weeks over players ignoring the Ranji Trophy with the Indian Premier League (IPL) around the corner, which led to BCCI secretary Jay Shah also coming out in public to point out the issue.
After pulling out of the Indian Test team for the series against South Africa, Kishan was not picked for the T20I series against Afghanistan and the ongoing red-ball assignment against England but did not play a single game for Jharkhand in the Ranji Trophy.
Shreyas Iyer was dropped from the team after the second Test and has not played any of Mumbai’s three Ranji Trophy games since then, with media reports denying his claim of an injury.
