Lara Trump tells South Carolina crowd she thinks GOP members would be happy for Republican National Committee to foot Donald Trump's hefty legal bills

  • Donald Trump’s daughter in law, Lara, addressed supporters in South Carolina
  • She said voters are ‘furious’ at Trump’s ‘persecution’ and would support the Republican National Committee paying his hefty legal bills

Donald Trump’s daughter-in-law said she thinks voters would support having the Republican National Committee (RNC) pay the former president’s ballooning legal fees.

Lara Trump – married to Eric Trump – told supporters on Wednesday at a campaign event in South Carolina that she thought the idea would get broad support among Republican voters who see his legal cases as ‘an attack’.

She added that she was not familiar with the RNC’s rules about paying Donald Trump’s legal fees which now top half a billion dollars as well as the millions he has spent on lawyers.

But she said: ‘That’s why people are furious right now. And they see the attacks against him. They feel like it´s an attack not just on Donald Trump but on this country. So yeah I think that is a big interest to people, absolutely.’

But a spokesperson for former president Trump later told ABC News that ‘absolutely none’ of the RNC’s funds would be spent on his legal bills.

Last week Trump called for the removal of the current RNC leaders and suggested that Lara Trump take their place as co-chair, alongside Michael Whatley, the current chair of the North Carolina GOP.

She said she would fight ‘fire with dynamite’ if she was made co-chair of the RNC

The RNC is the primary committee of the Republican party, it is responsible for maintaining and developing the Republican brand as well as fundraising and election strategy.

It is funded with donations from the public, with the money intended to go towards the presidential race once a Republican candidate has been selected.

But Lara said on Wednesday that ‘every penny’ of the RNC’s funds should go towards Trump’s re-election and ‘to ensuring that we have great candidates to expand our lead in the House and to take back the Senate.’

Lara supported his call for her to take on the RNC co-chair role on Wednesday, telling reporters that GOP voters will feel more trust in the RNC by having a Trump family member installed in leadership.

She said: ‘Having someone like me in there I think will go a long way for people. I can assure you that my loyalty is to my father-in-law and I will make sure that every penny is used properly.

‘It should be going to fight for Nov. 5 for the causes that we care about.’

Trump suggested his daughter-in-law take on the RNC role after he grew frustrated with the current chair, Ronna McDaniel.

Though McDaniel herself was once handpicked by Donald Trump to lead the party’s political machine, the former president had grown tired with her as some of his allies complained about the party’s losses in recent elections.

Critics also pointed to the party’s finances and a perception that the party did not do enough to focus on voter fraud, which Trump has blamed for his 2020 election loss.

Lara Trump said if she is made co-chair of the RNC, her loyalty would be to her father-in-law, but she believed the organization would stick to its policy of staying neutral in primary contests.

She said: ‘I don´t know why we would change course on that now.”

But she drew a different line with the presidential primary, where former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley is still running against Trump.

‘The RNC will be supporting the whoever the Republican nominee for president is,’ Lara Trump said. ‘I think we all know that´s going to be Donald Trump.’

Trump may not need the RNC money regardless, after two scientologist MAGA fans Elena and Grant Cardone established a GoFundMe page to help pay his latest legal bill.

The ardent MAGA supporters set up the page hours after the former president was ordered to pay $355 million fine for lying about his wealth for years.

‘I stand unwaveringly with President Donald Trump in the face of what I see as unprecedented and unfair treatment by certain judicial elements in New York’ Elena Cardone wrote on the page.

Cardone is seeking donations from supporters to cover the full cost of Trump’s fine. $927,000 had been donated as of Wednesday night.
