16:46 (IST)

After 15 overs,South Africa 83/7 ( Aiden Markram 31 , Kagiso Rabada 0)

Pat Cummins’ third over. Begins with a single and a dot. Oh it’s all gone a bit pear-shaped for South Africa. There’s a huge mixup, which sees Maharaj stranded in the middle of the pitch, and a diving Wade whips the bails off!

16:42 (IST)

After 14 overs,South Africa 82/6 ( Aiden Markram 30 , Keshav Maharaj 0)

OUT! David Miller’s gone for 16! It’s LBW, looks good, but Miller reviews. Replays confirm it would have hit the off-stump. Adam Zampa strikes twice in the same over! Dwaine Pretorius tried a cut, but ends up getting an edge on it which carries through into the hands of Wade.

16:31 (IST)

After 13 overs,South Africa 77/4 ( Aiden Markram 28 , David Miller 14)

Hazlewood’s third over, and Miller begins by defending the ball and running a single. Wade gets to it, and then whips off his glove and throws with pin-point accuracy to hit the stumps at the non-striker’s end. Miller was just in though, but great work from the Aussie keeper. Single and then yet another near run out. The South African duo are really living on the edge right now. One more single, and then a rapid double. Dot to end the over, six from it.

16:27 (IST)

After 12 overs,South Africa 71/4 ( Aiden Markram 26 , David Miller 10)

Maxwell’s final over begins with two singles. Oh, beauty from Maxwell, it zipped into Markram’s pads. Not LBW, but still, a dangerous delivery. Another single and then almost a run out! Miller and Markram tried to run a very, very quick single, and Maxwell unleashed his throw on time but not on target. FOUR to end Maxwell’s spell! Cut through deep backward point by Markram. Maxwell ends with figures of 4-0-24-1

16:23 (IST)

After 11 overs,South Africa 63/4 ( Aiden Markram 20 , David Miller 8)

Adam Zampa’s second over, and it’s almost LBW off the very first ball. Just a bit wide though, the umpire wasn’t convinced and neither were Australia’s players. A well run double off the second delivery and then almost caught and bowled! Oh never mind, it came up off the ground, wouldn’t have counted anyway. Two singles, and then a wonderfully bowled dot, Zampa’s a really slippery customer. Another dot to end the over, Australia continue to pile on the pressure.

16:17 (IST)

After 10 overs,South Africa 59/4 ( Aiden Markram 19 , David Miller 5)

Glenn Maxwell’s third over coming up. He’s been excellent so far. Starts off with a dot, and then Miller and Markram run a quick double. Single, dot and single follow. Not a bad over at all from Maxwell so far, South Africa really are struggling at the moment. Single to end, only five off it.

16:13 (IST)

After 9 overs,South Africa 54/4 ( Aiden Markram 18 , David Miller 1)

Mitchell Starc’s second over now. Starts off with a dot, and then a Markram leans into the drive and finds a gap in the covers for FOUR! It brings up the fifty-run mark for South Africa. Two singles follow, and then a dot

16:11 (IST)

After 8 overs,South Africa 46/4 ( Aiden Markram 11 , David Miller 0)

Cummins to bowl his second over. First is a single, and then Klaasen drives so so well past mid-off. That was firmly struck and it’s FOUR! OUT! Pat Cummins has his wicket, and Heinrich Klaasen departs after a leading edge carries to Smith at point.

16:04 (IST)

After 7 overs,South Africa 39/3 ( Aiden Markram 9 , Heinrich Klaasen 8)

Zampa to bowl his first over. Two singles to start, and then Mitchel Marsh pulls off a spectacular piece of fielding just in front of the boundary rope to save one run. A single and then Klaasen picks his spot to perfection, sending the ball racing away to the boundary at deep square leg for FOUR!

16:00 (IST)

After 6 overs,South Africa 29/3 ( Aiden Markram 7 , Heinrich Klaasen 1)

Pat Cummins in for his second over. First ball’s a dot, second ball there’s a huge call for LBW! The umpire isn’t having it, and Australia let the review timer run down. Another dot. Markram then stands tall and dispatches an overpitched delivery through the covers for FOUR. Quick single on the next ball, that could have been run out if the fielder had managed to find the wickets with his throw. Single to end the over.

15:57 (IST)

After 5 overs,South Africa 23/3 ( Aiden Markram 2 , Heinrich Klaasen 0)

This is a calamitous start for South Africa! Quinton de Kock is sent packing after he tries a cute scoop over the keeper, but ends up just sending the ball up and back down onto his own stumps. Hazlewood has his second wicket! Two dots follow. Five dots to end the over, it’s a wicket maiden.

15:50 (IST)

After 4 overs,South Africa 23/2 ( Quinton de Kock (W) 7 , Aiden Markram 2)

Maxwell to bowl his second over, can he get another wicket? Starts with a dot, single and then another dot, before Quinton de Kock moves onto his back foot and pulls it over wide mid-on for FOUR! Another dot and a single to end the over.

15:47 (IST)

After 3 overs,South Africa 17/2 ( Quinton de Kock (W) 2 , Aiden Markram 1)

OUT! Another wicket in quick succession, this time it’s Rassie van der Dussen who departs! It’s a big edge, and it’s caught behind by Wade, Hazlewood gets the wicket on his very first delivery of the match! Good over this, only one run conceded and a wicket!

15:42 (IST)

After 2 overs,South Africa 16/1 ( Quinton de Kock (W) 2 , Rassie van der Dussen 2)

Glenn Maxwell to bowl the second over. Single off the first delivery. Another single, and then a wicket! Maxwell strikes gold and Temba Bavuma is sent packing! Bavuma is well and truly bamboozled by the flight of the ball, it goes right through him and crashes onto the stumps. Three singles to end the over. Bringing Maxwell out might have raised a couple of eyebrows, but it’s paid off!

15:35 (IST)

After 1 overs,South Africa 11/0 ( Temba Bavuma (C) 11 , Quinton de Kock (W) 0)

Mitchell Starc will get us underway with the ball. Quinton de Kock and Temba Bavuma will face him. Good first delivery, but it’s prodded through the covers by Bavuma, who manages to run two. Dot and then FOUR! Nicely done by Temba Bavuma! Slightly overpitched by Starc and it’s driven wide of mid-off. Oh wow, another FOUR! Good start from Bavuma this, he’s caught it even better than he did the other four, battered through point. Single, and de Kock on strike now. Just a dot, 11 off the first over.

15:27 (IST)

South Africa Playing XI: Quinton de Kock(w), Temba Bavuma(c), Aiden Markram, Rassie van der Dussen, David Miller, Heinrich Klaasen, Dwaine Pretorius, Keshav Maharaj, Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje, Tabraiz Shamsi

15:10 (IST)

Australia Playing XI: Aaron Finch(c), David Warner, Mitchell Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, Steven Smith, Marcus Stoinis, Matthew Wade(w), Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Adam Zampa, Josh Hazlewood

Cummins, Starc, Hazlewood all start!

15:07 (IST)

Australia win the toss and opt to field first

“Looks like a very good wicket, we don’t see it changing much. There’s a nice covering of grass and a dry surface underneath. We’ve got experience in our side, but we haven’t had the luck of being together a lot recently, so hopefully we can do that today and get off to a great start.”

15:00 (IST)

“It’s a very good pitch, the grass looks even and the new-ball bowlers will get some help, even the spinners will enjoy this surface. It’s very warm in Abu Dhabi.” – Sunil Gavaskar and Danny Morrison in their pitch report

Struggling West Indies face tough ask against England in opener

Two-time champions but currently out of sorts, the West Indies will hope to raise their game by a few notches when they open their campaign against favourites England in a Super 12 match of the ICC men’s T20 World Cup here on Saturday.

A team packed with some of the most destructive T20 players, the West Indies cut a sorry figure in the two warm-up games against Pakistan and Afghanistan and would need to quickly shrug off the disappointment ahead of the tournament proper.

ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021 Points table

Bowlers Wanindu Hasaranga and Lahiru Kumara set up a crushing eight-wicket win for Sri Lanka in the final round-one match of the Twenty20 World Cup after they skittled out Netherlands for 44 on Friday

Sri Lanka moved into the Super 12 stage with three wins and top of their group ahead of Namibia who shocked Ireland in the first match of the day in Sharjah.

Australia’s top order in focus against in-form South Africa

David Warner’s form is a huge concern but the team is adamant the opener will turn things around. His IPL form was woeful, he was dropped from the team for the second time this year after scores of 0 and 2 last month. His troubled run continued in the two warm-up games where he scored 0 and 1.

Skipper Aaron Finch, who is coming off a knee surgery, is also short of match practice as is vice-captain Pat Cummins who hasn’t played any cricket since the IPL’s first leg in April. He even arrived to the UAE later than the others.

Hello and welcome to our coverage of the T20 World Cup!

The Super 12 stage of the tournament will officially begin today with an afternoon fixture which will see heavyweights Australia take on South Africa. Stay tuned for all the latest updates, the live score and more!

Australia vs South Africa, T20 World Cup, Latest Updates:

Hazlewood’s third over, and Miller begins by defending the ball and running a single. Wade gets to it, and then whips off his glove and throws with pin-point accuracy to hit the stumps at the non-striker’s end. Miller was just in though, but great work from the Aussie keeper. Single and then yet another near run out. The South African duo are really living on the edge right now. One more single, and then a rapid double. Dot to end the over, six from it.

Preview: Big guns will be in action on the opening day of the Super 12 stage of T20 World Cup. The first match is between Aaron Finch’s Australia against Temba Bavuma’s South Africa at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi.

Both Group 1 teams haven’t won the T20 World title and they will aim to get off to a winning start.

A win on Saturday will certainly be a lot of help to Australia who enter the tournament with a few concerns. They are suffered four series defeats against Bangladesh, West Indies, New Zealand, India and England, also losing eight of their last 10 T20I games.

David Warner is going through a tough time with the bat. His IPL team Sunrisers Hyderabad dropped him after failures in the UAE and in the two warm-up games against New Zealand and India, he made 0 and 1.

At least form-wise, South Africa are better when compared to their opponents. They are entering the tournament on the back of three consecutive series win against West Indies, Ireland and Sri Lanka. They have also beaten Afghanistan and Sri Lanka in the two warm-up games.

Batting is one area which Proteas have to concentrate and a lot will depend on Quinton de Kock. In the bowling department, the likes of Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje and Lungi Ngidi make a formidable unit.
