Aussies hit back at Americans calling NT quarantine centre a 'concentration camp' by posting photos in bikinis - and pointing out there is 'free wifi, nice food, and aircon'

US conspiracy theorists describe Howard Springs as 'concentration camp'Many have likened the facility near Darwin to Nazi death camp, AuschwitzAustralians responded by posting pictures of people sunbaking at the campThe official Auschwitz Twitter account  described comparisons as 'shameful'

Australians have hit back at Americans who compared the Howard Springs quarantine facility to a ‘concentration camp’ by posting photos of people in bikinis and activewear who appear to be on a holiday.

US-based conspiracy theorists reacted to news that three people had escaped the centre in the early hours of Wednesday morning by likening the facility 30km south-east of Darwin to ‘Auschwitz’, the infamous Nazi death camp for Jews.

One such theorist on Twitter ran a pic of Howard Spring alongside a picture of Auschwitz with the text: ‘Remember the good old days, when traveling to Australia sounded exciting?

Another American on Twitter posted:  ‘I Twitter searched ‘Howard Springs’.

‘The comparisons to Auschwitz are not an exaggeration.

‘My first thought, ‘all those tweets from the sophisticated Aussies about how smart they were to give up their guns are not gonna well’. Pray for the Australians.’

One American TikTok user said Australia was ’rounding up all the Aborigines and putting them in concentration camps’.

But Australian publisher and political commentator Claire Lehmann was one who quickly rubbished the conspiracy theorists claims.

‘Lol. Just discovered that there’s a Howard Springs hashtag on Instagram, and it’s full of hot babes posing at what [conspiracy theorists] call a ‘concentration camp,’ Tweeted Lehmann.

An Instagram location search on 'Howard Spring's turns up multiple pictures of woman in bikinis and activewear enjoying the facilities, in contrast to American claims the centre is a 'concentration camp'.

'It might be pleasant, with air con, nice food and free wifi, you might not be forced to go there just given the option if you can’t isolate at home, you might be able drink beer and watch Netflix for two weeks while getting paid by the govt, but did you know it’s literally Auschwitz?' Ms Lehmann followed up with a sarcastic tweet saying: ‘It might be pleasant, with air con, nice food and free wifi, you might not be forced to go there just given the option if you can’t isolate at home, you might be able drink beer and watch Netflix for two weeks while getting paid by the govt, but did you know it’s literally Auschwitz?’

The comparisons by Americans to a concentration camp caused the official memorial account for Auschwitz to Tweet in response: ‘Authors of such comparisons seem to know little about the history of Auschwitz or other camps.

‘They exploit and misuse the horrible suffering of real people. This is shameful and disrespectful to the memory of victims. We can only ask them to learn & reflect.’

The facility comprises primarily single room accommodation with no internal connecting doors. There are four rooms to a shared veranda space and all rooms are king single beds and have ensuites.

Rooms include free-to-air television and airconditioning.

No cooking facilities are provided, instead three meals a day are provided through catering, with vegetarian, vegan, Halal, medical dietary needs and food allergies accommodated.

Police are confirming the escapees’ identities from Howard Springs and have urged any witnesses to contact them.

A heavy police presence remains on scene with officers in masks searching vehicles in the area as Howard Springs staff do a headcount of those staying at the facility.

It’s the second escape from the centre in a week, with a 27-year-old man allegedly breaking out of the facility before being found in a bar on Darwin’s Mitchell Street party strip last Friday night.

A man in quarantine at Howard Springs tested positive for the Omicron variant on Monday and there are growing fears the virus may have leaked into the community.

Genomic testing has confirmed the repatriated Australian, who travelled to Darwin from South Africa, contracted the new strain, health officials announced on Monday.

The man aged in his 30s arrived from Johannesburg on November 25 and was taken straight to the Howard Springs facility, where he remains in isolation.

There are now six known cases of the mutation in Australia.

The NT’s Health Minister Natasha Fyles said on Monday authorities weren’t ‘overly concerned’ about the presence of Omicron in the facility.

‘The quarantine facility itself is broken into different zones so our international repatriations do not interact with any of our local community members, Territorians, who may be in the facility as a close contact,’ Ms Fyles said.

Currently, international arrivals on repatriation flights are required to quarantine for 14 days at Howard Springs.

Travellers who arrive on the daily standard international flights into Darwin Airport are permitted to quarantine for seven days at their homes or another suitable location.

The flights are expected to become twice daily from December 19.

The home quarantine requirement is scheduled to end on December 20 but all arrivals will be required to have a rapid antigen test.
