Das Justizministerium in NRW will ab Montag im großen Stil Bitcoin versteigern. Allein die Nachricht löst im Internet einen Hype aus.

Der Wahnsinn brach am Donnerstag mit einer nüchternen Einladung los: Über Twitter hatte das Justizministerium Nordrhein-Westfalen verkündet, am kommenden Montag beschlagnahmte Bitcoin im Wert von zig Millionen Euro zu versteigern. In Windeseile verbreitete sich die Nachricht über alle Kanäle. Im Justizministerium in Düsseldorf war am Morgen darauf die Hölle los, wie Mitarbeiter versichern. Am Telefon meldeten sich im Minutentakt aufgeregte Menschen, die sich für die Auktion anmelden wollten. Andere kamen persönlich und wollten Bitcoin von der Stelle weg kaufen. “Ich konnte noch keinen Kaffee trinken und keinen Happen essen”, berichtet Pressesprecherin Hilal Tanrisever am Freitagmittag. “Man hat uns hier die Bude eingerannt.”

Aus den Live-Berichten aus dem Ministerium klingt eine Mischung aus Erstaunen, Fassungslosigkeit und großer Vorfreude auf das, was am Montag bevorsteht. “Wir haben mit großem Interesse gerechnet, aber das übersteigt unsere Vorstellungskraft”, sagt Tanrisever. Doch von ungefähr kommt der Hype natürlich nicht. Der Zeitpunkt, um Bitcoin zu versteigern, könnte besser kaum sein. Erst vor Kurzem hat die Cyber-Währung nach ihren üblichen Tal- und Bergfahrten ihr absolutes Allzeithoch erreicht. Am Freitag lag der Preis für eine “Münze” noch bei 63 300 Dollar. Vor knapp elf Jahren, das zum Vergleich, kostete ein Bitcoin sieben Cent. Kein Wunder also, dass die Auktion Begehrlichkeiten weckt. Krypto-Fans wittern ein echtes Schnäppchen. Viele rechnen schließlich damit, dass der Wert bis Ende des Jahres deutlich über 100 000 Dollar steigt.

Die Bitcoin wurden allesamt im Zusammenhang mit Straftaten beschlagnahmt. Für viele Kriminelle sind sie das Zahlungsmittel der Wahl, wenn sie im Internet mit Waffen oder Drogen handeln. Viele dieser Geschäfte laufen über das verschlüsselte Darknet. Im Laufe der Jahre haben die Strafverfolgungsbehörden in NRW so Hunderte Bitcoin im Wert eines zweistelligen Millionenbetrags sichergestellt. Auf mehreren Auktionen sollen sie nun häppchenweise zu Geld gemacht werden. Es freut sich letztlich die Staatskasse.

Auch im Netz hat die Nachricht eingeschlagen. Neben juchzenden Emojis hat sie zahlreiche Fragezeichen hinterlassen. “Hä?”, “Echt jetzt?”, “Bitte was?”. So klangen viele der Reaktionen. Viele stellten sich die Frage, wieso der Staat seine Bitcoin nicht einfach zu Marktpreisen über die üblichen Handelsplattformen verkauft. “Warte mal, die versteigern Geld im Internet? War ja klar, dass die Idee wieder von der CDU kommt”, scherzt einer. Doch ganz so einfach ist die Sache nicht. Im Justizministerium ist man zum Schluss gekommen, dass Bitcoin genauso behandelt werden müssen wie etwa beschlagnahmte Hubschrauber oder Lamborghini – man muss sie versteigern. Nichtsdestotrotz rechnen sie in NRW mit einem warmen Geldregen. “Wir hoffen schon, dass wir möglichst nah herankommen an den aktuellen Kurs. Je mehr, desto besser”, sagt Christoph Hebbecker, Pressesprecher der Zentral- und Ansprechstelle Cybercrime Nordrhein-Westfalen, die das Event organisiert.

Die technischen Einzelheiten der Auktion will das Justizministerium erst am Montag bekanntgeben. “Es wird aber eine Versteigerung sein wie jede andere auch, nur dass man auf Bitcoin bietet”, sagt Hebbecker. Man habe wochenlang an den Vorbereitungen gearbeitet. “Dass der Zeitpunkt der Auktion jetzt so günstig fällt, ist auch ein bisschen Glück”, sagt er. Die Menge der versteigerten Bitcoin und ihr Startpreis werden bis Montag geheim gehalten. Los geht die Online-Auktion, für die man sich nicht anmelden muss, um 12 Uhr über das Portal justiz-auktion.de. Auf Twitter und Youtube wird das Spektakel live übertragen. Eines kann Pressesprecher Hebbecker aber jetzt schon verraten: “Wir werden sicherlich nicht mit einem Euro anfangen”, verspricht er.
