Auftakt des EU-Gipfels: Merkel wirft Lukaschenko staatlichen Menschenhandel vor

Die deutsche Bundeskanzlerin Angela Merkel hat dem belarussischen Machthaber Alexander Lukaschenko staatlichen Menschenhandel vorgeworfen.

Zum Auftakt des EU-Gipfels in Brüssel drohte sie Lukaschenko am Donnerstag auch mit weiteren Wirtschaftssanktionen.

Damit wolle man deutlich machen, «dass wir diese Art des Menschenhandels – das muss man ja sagen – von staatlicher Seite verurteilen», sagte die Politikerin. Das Thema werde am Freitag beim Gipfel breiten Raum einnehmen.

Auch EU-Kommissionspräsidentin Ursula von der Leyen kritisierte das Vorgehen Lukaschenkos scharf. «Wir sehen dies als hybriden Angriff von Belarus an», sagte sie. «Kein Menschenleben sollte aus politischen Gründen aufs Spiel gesetzt werden. Und deswegen bin ich sicher, dass der Rat eine sehr starke und sehr geschlossene Antwort auf dieses Verhalten in Belarus geben wird, das gestoppt werden muss.»

Die Europäische Union beschuldigt Lukaschenko, in organisierter Form Flüchtlinge aus Krisenregionen an die EU-Aussengrenze zu bringen. Lukaschenko hatte Ende Mai angekündigt, dass Minsk Migranten nicht mehr an der Weiterreise in die EU hindern werde – als Reaktion auf verschärfte westliche Sanktionen gegen sein Land. Seitdem mehren sich Meldungen über versuchte illegale Grenzübertritte an den EU-Aussengrenzen zu Belarus sowie an der deutsch-polnischen Grenze.

Litauen, Polen und Lettland haben darauf mit einem verstärkten Schutz der Grenze und mit dem Bau von Hunderten Kilometern Grenzzaun reagiert. In allen drei EU-Ländern weist der Grenzschutz inzwischen Migranten ab. Trotzdem gelangen immer mehr Menschen auf der Route über Belarus und Polen nach Deutschland.
