ATP Rankings: Novak Djokovic secures landmark, Jannik Sinner closes gap, Carlos Alcaraz loses ground

Following the Madrid Open, Novak Djokovic has entered his 424th week as the ATP world No 1, while Jannik Sinner has closed the gap at the top.
Djokovic has occupied top spot since overtaking Carlos Alcaraz after his US Open triumph in September to start his 11th stint as the world No 1.
The great Serbian did not compete at the 2024 Madrid Open and so he remains on 9,990 points after also opting to skip the Masters 1000 event last year.
The 24-time Grand Slam champion continues to extend his own record of being the oldest world No 1 in history and has now ensured he will remain at the peak of the ATP Rankings when he turns 37 on May 22.
Sinner gained 200 points by reaching the quarter-finals in Madrid to take his points total to 8,860, allowing him to cut Djokovic’s lead slightly.
However, the world No 2 will not be able to make further inroads this month after being forced to withdraw from the Italian Open due to the hip injury that caused him to pull out of his last eight match in Madrid.
Carlos Alcaraz remains in third position, but has dropped 8oo points after losing in the Madrid quarter-finals to eventual champion Andrey Rublev. The Spaniard had been the two-time defending champion in the Spanish capital and, like Sinner, he will miss Rome through injury.
Daniil Medvedev is now just 140 points behind Alcaraz in the No 4 position after his run to the last eight of the tournament.
Rublev has climbed two places from eighth to sixth after defeating Felix Auger-Aliassime in Sunday’s Madrid final to claim his second career Masters 1000 title.
With his runner-up run, Auger-Aliassime has ascended 15 spots to make his return to the top 20, having been ranked 35th before the tournament. Semi-finalist Jiri Lehecka, meanwhile, has risen eight spots to a career-high ranking of world No 23.
Jan-Lennard Struff (-17), Borna Coric (-21), Aslan Karatsev (-38) and Daniel Altmaier (-17) are all players who have suffered considerable ranking drops after falling short of their impressive 2023 Madrid Open results.
Andy Murray has also slipped down 20 places from 57th to 77th after the 175 points from his title at the 2023 Aix en-Provence Challenger fell off.
Rafael Nadal has climbed 207 places from 512th to 305th with the 100 points he earned from advancing to the fourth round in Madrid.
