Jose Mourinho has revealed that he was once offered the England job and feels the Three Lions are more than capable of securing the Euro 2024 title.

England, currently managed by Gareth Southgate, head to Germany this summer, looking to secure their maiden Euros title after reaching their first final in 2021.

The Three Lions, third in the FIFA world rankings, are among the favourites to taste glory with a squad that includes superstars Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham.

While Mourinho is of course hoping his nation Portugal will repeat their heroics of 2016, he feels England could come out on top due to their ‘very good’ current crop of players.

‘It is a very good generation,’ Mourinho told the Vibe with Five podcast on Thursday. ‘They got to the Euro [2020] final, they can do it [win Euro 2024].

‘The mentality of the guys who have gone abroad, [Jude] Bellingham for example, I believe there is something that separates him from the boys that were born in England, developed in England, and are playing in England.

‘He can add something different, he is a kid of the world. He has a big, big personality.

‘Southgate with Steve Holland, he was my assistant at Chelsea and what a person, they’ve done a beautiful job there, but it’s just missing that little bit.

‘I cannot say I wish they do it because I think Portugal can do it and I wish Portugal do it.’

Mourinho also confirmed that he turned down the England job back in 2007 following the sacking of Steve McClaren, who was eventually replaced by Fabio Capello.

‘I could have been the coach of [the England] national team,’ Mourinho said. ‘I had it there on the table.

‘[I turned it down] because I always had national team jobs as something I wouldn’t enjoy. It was in 2007-08 and Mr Capello got the job.’

Meanwhile, Mourinho also spoke openly about his time in charge of Manchester United and has ruled out a second stint at Old Trafford.
