SHAH ALAM: No one is calling for the 15th General Election to be held during the floods.

Instead, Umno wants it before the expected floods, says the party’s youth chief Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki.

“People have misinterpreted it to mean that Umno wants elections during the floods. That’s not right.

“We want it now, before the floods hit. We still have at least two months,” he told the media after a book launch event here yesterday.

The annual major floods caused by the monsoon are expected to hit at the end of November.

“Dissolution (of Parliament) can be done now, before November, as the Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has predicted that floods will only occur at the end of November,” said Asyraf.

“We still have time. The people are overreacting. Umno is also against having polls during the floods.”

However, he added that if the floods happen when Parliament is dissolved, the caretaker government could take precautions such as proclaiming an emergency to put the polls on hold.

The Barisan Nasional youth chief also reiterated that the general election was important because the current government was a “compromise” between differing parties, causing instability.

“The economic and investment community will only have faith in a government that is politically stable … not like right now.

“Even a few days ago, we had former prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob calling each other out (while both are in the government),” he said.

On Monday, Muhyiddin said it was better for Ismail Sabri to call for a general election if the country’s economy is not managed properly.

The Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia president said Ismail Sabri could not be oblivious to the slide of the ringgit – which affected the prices of imported food.

However, Muhyiddin, who is also Pagoh MP and National Recovery Council chairman, said he was not pushing for an early election.

In response, Ismail Sabri pointed out that Muhyiddin himself had failed as he was the Council’s chairman.

“In terms of economy, we have (Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department) Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed managing it as well as the Council which is chaired by Muhyiddin.

“The Council also advises the government so this is a collective responsibility. If it (economy) fails, then everyone fails, including the NRC,” he said on Monday.

Asyraf said elections were long overdue since the fall of the Pakatan Harapan’s administration in 2020, so GE15 had to be called as soon as possible.
