Asylum seekers being moved from Dublin's Mount Street in multi-agency operation
Tents cluster near Dublin’s Office of International Protection, which have served as temporary homes for asylum seekers amidst debates sparked by Ireland’s justice minister, Helen McEntee, over migration patterns, human rights and refugee organizations question assertions regarding asylum seekers crossing from Northern Ireland.
A multi-agency operation is underway in Dublin City centre on Wednesday morning as authorities are transferring asylum seekers living in tents from Mount Street to IPAS-designated accommodation.
The operation is being conducted by Gardaí, Dublin City Council, the HSE, the Department of Children and the Department of Justice. There is a large Garda presence at the scene and a number of buses are parked up, ready to transport migrants from the street.
Taoiseach Simon Harris yesterday announced his intention to clear the Mount Street settlement with the intention to provide the migrants with more suitable accommodation.
Gardaí have advised the public that there are currently traffic diversions in place at Mount Street, Dublin 2.
In a statement provided to the Irish Mirror, a spokesperson for the Government said: “A joint operation between the Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth; the Department of Justice; An Garda Síochána; Dublin City Council; the Office of Public Works; and the HSE is underway on Mount Street, Dublin.
“The purpose of the operation is to ensure the safe movement of people seeking international protection from the tents on Mount Street to International Protection Accommodation Service (IPAS)-designated accommodation. The IPAS-designated accommodation has toilets and showers; health services; indoor areas where food is provided; facilities to charge phones and personal devices; access to transport to and from Dublin City Centre; and 24 hour onsite security.”
