Astonishment at the agent’s closure of Waku Waku: ‘Everything in me screams: not this’

viral messageThe notorious closure of the Utrecht restaurant Waku Waku is also causing great surprise among enforcers. Pim Vos, community officer in Vught in Brabant, writes off the frustration in a massively shared LinkedIn message. A spokesperson for the East Brabant police emphasizes that this is a personal matter. “This is a private opinion and not what we stand for. We are an objective police force and do not interfere in this discussion.” Police scientist Jaap Timmer does not rule out the possibility that Vos will be raped on the fingers.

The municipality of Utrecht had the locks of restaurant Waku Waku replaced today, because the operator does not want to check the CoronaCheck app. Owner Floris Beukers does not want to do that because he would then make a distinction between people with and without the CoronaCheck app. Beukers doesn’t feel like that, he sees it as discrimination.

Within the police there is understanding for Beukers’ action. ‘I am nailed to the ground today’, writes local police officer Pim Vos: ‘I joined the police to help people. ‘Watchful and helpful’. I don’t know what I’m allowed to say in my role in the police force but everything in me screams ‘not this‘.’

In the much-discussed message on LinkedIn, which has been ‘liked’ thousands of times and is also widely distributed on Twitter, Vos states that the cabinet uses two standards when it comes to corona policy. ‘It cannot be that you are allowed to stand against each other in the Efteling in front of the Python (vaccinated and unvaccinated) and a restaurant that really wants people to live healthy (Waku Waku, ed.) is closed because they do not want to ask to a check?’

‘Deep bow’

It is rare for members of the police to speak out about corona policy in public. Vos is showered with compliments on social media. ‘Pim Vos, a brave cop. He sticks his neck out. Deep bow to this gentleman. An agent at heart, serving the citizen and protecting the citizen,” reads one of the many reactions on Twitter.

According to police scientist Jaap Timmer, however, it is ‘plausible’ that Vos is addressed by his superior. “Fortunately, every person, regardless of his or her profession, can invoke freedom of expression in the Netherlands, but it has been recognized among a certain category of civil servants, such as police officers, that this freedom can sometimes chafe with the performance of the position. His executives might find that to be the case here. I think there is a good chance that they will discuss this with this agent and advise him not to do this again in the future.”

The Brabant police do not want to get involved in the discussion and emphasize that Vos makes his statements in a personal capacity.

Still open

Incidentally, the restaurant Waku Waku, which was closed by order of the municipality of Utrecht, partly opened today. The restaurant sells drinks from the doorway. According to a spokesperson for the restaurant, it is a ‘symbolic’ opening. “The turnover cannot be compensated with this, but it is a signal that the owners want to convey: that they will not succumb to this policy. We hope that people will continue to come here every day.” The door was pushed open to loud applause.

An estimated two hundred people are on the terrace. It’s mostly about sympathizers. There are also officers and other enforcers who chat with people sitting on the ground. The atmosphere is calm. A handful of counter-protesters stand across the street. They carry a sign with the slogan ‘Vegans against fascists and Nazis’.
