Unusually for a 3-0 defeat, Aston Villa actually put up their best performance of the season in terms of xG at Stamford Bridge last weekend, so much so that The Villans actually outperformed Chelsea on that barometer (CHE 1.13 – 1.33 AV).
Much of Villa’s spark came from Ollie Watkins who almost single-handedly caused the Chelsea defence more problems than they had faced in their previous games combined. It surely bodes well for the club that Watkins looked so sharp on his first start of the season.
Despite Watkins’ endeavours, Villa were ultimately unable to cash in the chances that come their way but Dean Smith’s side shouldn’t find Everton anything like as tough to break down as Chelsea.
Everton have had no such attacking problems despite having been without star striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin and they have fired their way to fourth in the table under new boss Rafael Benitez. The Toffees are averaging 1.85 xGF so far this term so unless they have an off day, it looks highly likely that Villa are going to have to score at least twice to win this match.
However, Everton are giving up chances, as just one clean sheet from five games in all comps testifies, and Villa are expected to unleash an attack that includes Bailey, Ings and Watkins, so the Villa Park faithful have every right to expect their side to improve on recent efforts in terms of forcing openings.
Let’s swerve the outright market because a goals-based wager looks a safer play. Both teams to score (8/11) looks a big runner but we can boost that price to 5/4 by combining it with over 2.5 goals.
