Aston Villa U21 player ratings vs Charlton as youngsters crash out of the EFL Trophy

Aston Villa’s under-21s side have sadly crashed out of the Papa John’s Trophy after a 2-1 defeat to Charlton.

Mason Burstow peeled away from both Joshua Feeney and Sil Swinkels and lashed home his first-time effort to fire the hosts into the lead.

Finley Thorndike did manage to fire his side back into the game, after he finished an exceptionally well worked move by the youth side. Villa built up from the back with Feeney, which led to Caleb Chukwuemeka slotting Thorndike in, who made no mistake in front of goal.

Sadly, just seconds later Tim Iroegbunam gave away a penalty and Charlton’s top scorer, Jayden Stockley, fired his side back into the lead.

Here are the player ratings from this evening.

Oliwier Zych – 6

He claimed several crosses but his decision making at times could be questioned. He was well out of position for the first goal, which made a difficult finish as easy as possible for Burstow. There were also moments where he failed to communicate with his defenders, which led to moments of confusion.

This is to be expected from the 17-year-old, though. Who shouldn’t be disheartened with a solid performance in general against a League One side. He’ll be able to identify the areas he needs to improve on and develop from this fantastic experience.

Frankie Ealing – 6

Relatively solid throughout this game but there were a few misplaced or overhit passes which either catalysed a move for Charlton or prevented his own side building up. His defensive work rate can’t be faulted. The young right back ran relentlessly till the final whistle and was always dedicated in his defensive effort.

Josh Feeney – 7

He looked accomplished and composed at the back. At just 16 years of age, it could be overwhelming playing senior opposition, but he dealt with it well. He also played a crucial role in the goal, displaying his composure on the ball and driving his team forward. Which eventually led to the equaliser.

He displayed confidence and an ability beyond his years and looked very promising here.

Sil Swinkels – 7

The partnership of Swinkels and Feeney looked very solid. They both read the game well and possess a very good reading of the game at such young ages. Their defensive instincts consistently shine through and they kept a League One side to just two shots on goal this evening, outlining just how impressive they were.

Benjamin Chrisene – 6

A few wayward passes but that prevented his side building an attack and he was substituted in the 60 th minute. He was dribbled past twice and the main threat in the first half was coming down the wings, outlining he may have struggled.

Tim Iroegbunam – 8

He was exceptional in this game. From his first touch to his defensive instinct, he looked a class above even the senior opposition at times. The penalty he gave away looked harsh, as he seemingly got a portion of the ball. Aside from this incident he was a real bright spark and was the constant driver the team would look for to drag them forward. Very impressive.

Lamare Bogarde – 7

A confident and assured performance in midfield. He never looked panicked whilst on the ball and would always manage to find both space and time when it looked difficult to do so. He did his defensive duties well and allowed the players around him to flood forward whilst he acted as the anchor.

Caleb Chukwuemeka – 7

He was extremely bright in the first half but fell off in the second, which possibly outlines a lack of fitness. He set the goal up and at times his ability on the ball and strength proved to be too much for Charlton. With two key passes and three interceptions, he did everything that was asked of him on this occasion.

Finley Thorndike – 8

A stand-out performed in this game. Not only did he rifle the equaliser in, but he also recorded a massive five key passes in this fixture. He was quick on the ball and looked a constant threat in this game. A very impressive outing for him.

Jaden Philogene-Bidace – 7

He looked bright throughout this game, but the final aspect of his play just wasn’t clicking this evening. His quick feet, pace and trickery were all there, but the end product evaded him on this occasion. His frustrations could be outlined by the late booking he received in this fixture.

He did win a total of ten duels however, which outlines his commitment defensively to the cause. What he couldn’t control going forward, he made up for defensively.

Cameron Archer – 6

It was a fairly uneventful afternoon for Archer, who failed to make an impact in round two of the EFL Trophy after winning Player of the Round in the first. He saw two of his shots blocked, one saved and two sale wide.

He did find himself through on goal at one point, but before he could pull the trigger he was judged to have been offside.

Jayden Barber – 6

Just the 20 minutes of action for Barber, who made an immediate impact as he came on and linked up well with Philogene-Bidace. Sadly, his cross was easily collected by the keeper. Other than this he was rarely involved in the game but didn’t put a foot wrong, aside from one misplaced pass.

Tristan Abldeen-Goodridge – 6

In 13 minutes of action, he made just one pass and had four touches of the ball. This wasn’t his fault and was simply down to the game management of Charlton, who killed the game off towards the end.

Villa posed a threat in this fixture and could be considered unlucky to not have progressed given the fact Charlton had two shots on target and scored both. There are many positives that these young players can build on however and they will develop from this experience.
