Aspen Ladd's coach wasn't wrong for UFC Vegas 40 cornering

Aspen Ladd suffered a unanimous decision loss to Norma Dumont in the main event of UFC Vegas 40 on Saturday night. However, the loss would have not been capped off without some corner controversy. Down three rounds, Ladd’s coach, Jim West, laid down the law on his fighter entering the fourth round.

A video of the encounter can be seen below.

“Down 3-0, please tell me what you’re doing,” West said. “You have to throw more than one punch…it’s the fourth round. You’re down 3-0.”

If this was a man-to-man talk, there is a chance that no one would have batted an eye, but with women’s MMA, situations like this are rarely seen in the UFC, if ever.

West, who is also Ladd’s boyfriend, later apologized for the way he spoke to his fighter in a recent Instagram post.

“Tonight was not our night,” West wrote on Instagram. “It’s been our night many many times at the highest level but not tonight. I blame myself. Though it may not be my fault, it’s not up for debate. I take all of the blame.”

Jim West’s actions painted a bigger picture of Aspen Ladd’s career path

From then on, Ladd performed more adequately, but it wasn’t enough to steal the fight in the end. Although Dumont secured the win, the story of the fight became West’s coaching style towards Ladd. In sports, tough coaches come and go. It’s the nature of the business. But in some cases, MMA is different. There is a calculated, relaxed, go-with-the-flow type of approach like Greg Jackson, for example. There are others, in this case, West, who just call it as they see it.

Given where Ladd has been in her career and the adversity she has faced, West’s words, while perhaps harsh, were justified. She was given a second opportunity seven days after missing weight for a previously scheduled bantamweight fight, on top of the fact that a victory would have likely put her back in the title picture.

This isn’t to say that West could have handled the situation any differently, but it does represent the idea that MMA is a cutthroat business, and sometimes, not every game plan is going to play out exactly in camp as it does in the Octagon.

If there was one major takeaway from this ordeal, it’s that telling the truth, no matter how difficult it may be, is better off long-term than sugarcoating a scenario that isn’t factually accurate.
