The less severe is the lymphedema, the more is the chances of recovering. The condition of primary lymphedema usually stabilizes with the help of medications and surgical interventions. Persons who develop chronic lymphedema have 10% percent chances of developing lymphangiosarcoma, a type of soft tissue cancer. The tumor is highly aggressive and there is less than 10% percent chance of 5 year survival rate. The average survival post diagnosis is mostly 19 months.
