late late eurosong special: bambie thug selected to represent ireland at eurovision 2024

Bambie Thug will represent Ireland at the Eurovision Song Contest 2024

Cork’s Bambie Thug will represent Ireland at Eurovision 2024 in Sweden after defying bookies odds to claim top spot in Friday night’s Late Late Show Eurosong special.

It was described by Derry’s Brooke Scullion, who previously represented Ireland at the Eurovision Song Contest, as “the strongest national final in 50 years”.

We had a night full of lights, lyrics and laughs as six acts battled it out to earn the right to fly the flag of Ireland in Malmö on 11 May.

Hosted by Patrick Kielty, the contest saw Bambie beat 380 entries in total to wind up number one with their late-night goth tune Doomsday Blue, which was an audible favourite amongst the audience in attendance.

The artist wanted the song to portray their existence of feeling “overlooked”, particularly as a member of the non-binary community, a community they feel is under-represented in Ireland.

They said that they wanted to “create a song that shapeshifted through several genres but still worked and made sense.”

They continued: “It’s why it transports you from alt witchy verses to killer screams, pop choruses, a jazzy middle-eight, before ending in a metallic roar of electro and heavy guitars. It perfectly showcases the different facets of me as an artist. I can be explosive and hard-hitting, but I can also be sweet and soulful.”

Performing second on the night, reaction to the song was electric. Judge Louise says she was “blown away” by the production. Arthur was “captivated” by the “incredible” showing, while Gearóid described the act as taking a “risk”, but he loved it.

Coming into the Eurosong special on Friday, Erica Cody was overwhelming bookies’ favourite with a 54% chance of winning versus Bambie Thug’s 16%.

Other artists to perform on the night included Isabella Kearney who kicked off proceedings with Let Me Be The Fire, JyellowL ft Toshín who rapped Judas, Ailsha with her “Pussycat Dolls goes metal” tune Go Tobann, Louis Walsh boyband Next In Line singing their ballad Love Like Us and long-time favourite to represent Ireland in Sweden, Erica Cody with Love Me Like I Do.

Erica had earlier in the week voiced her opposition to Israel’s participation in the contest this year in light of its almost four-month long bombardment of Gaza, killing 26,000 people.

The final results of the votes submitted by the international jury, the national jury and the public left the final points tally looking like this:

There was also a surprise guest appearance by the Kalush Orchestra who performed their winning entry from Eurovision 2022 for Ukraine with the catchy hit Stefania.
