Indian captain Rohit Sharma is celebrating his 37th birthday on Tuesday (April 30). The right-handed batter, who was born on April 30, 1987, made his international debut for India on June 23, 2007, against Ireland during an ODI match played in Belfast. During an ODI match played between India and Sri Lanka in Kolkata on November 13, 2014, he scored 264 runs from 173 balls. In that match, he also set the world record for hitting most fours (33) in an inning and scoring most runs via boundaries (186).

• Most 100s in one edition of ODI World Cup: During the 2019 ODI World Cup, which was played in England, Rohit scored five centuries in nine matches for India, which is a record for most hundreds by any player in one edition of the tournament. Rohit finished as the leading run scorer in that tournament, with 648 runs to his name.

• Most 100s in ODI World Cup: Rohit holds the world record for scoring the most 100s in ODI World Cup history. In 28 matches played for India across three editions, Rohit has seven centuries to his name. Sachin Tendulkar and David Warner are second on the list, with six centuries each to their names.

• Most Sixes in international cricket: In 472 matches for India played across formats (Tests + ODIs + T20Is), Rohit has smashed 597 sixes, which is the world record for most sixes hit by any player in international cricket. Former West Indies captain Chris Gayle is second on the list with 553 maximums to his name. Apart from that, Rohit has also smashed the most sixes (190) in T20Is and in the ODI World Cup (54 in 28 matches).

• Most matches in T20Is: Rohit, who made his T20I debut for India on September 19, 2007, against England in Durban, has played the highest number of matches (151) in the shortest format of the game. In 151 T20Is, Rohit has scored 3974 runs and picked up one wicket.

• Most 100s in T20Is: Rohit has scored five centuries in 143 innings of 151 T20Is played so far, which is a world record for most 100s in the shortest format of the game. Australian batter Glenn Maxwell has also scored five centuries in T20Is.

• Most successful player and captain in IPL: Rohit Sharma has won six IPL titles so far, which is the joint-most by any player in the tournament’s history. Out of his six IPL trophies, Rohit won one with the Deccan Chargers in 2009 and five with the Mumbai Indians in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020. With five titles as MI captain to his name, he is the joint-most successful captain in the cash-rich league’s history.

• Most successful player in Asia Cup: Rohit Sharma is the joint-most successful player and captain in Asia Cup history. He won Asia Cup titles four times in 2010, 2016, 2018, and 2023 (level with Ravindra Jadeja). In the 2018 and 2023 editions of the tournament, he was the Indian captain, which helped him equal Mohammad Azharuddin and MS Dhoni’s record of lifting the prestigious continental title twice as captain.

Apart from these, Rohit is one of the two players (the second is Shakib Al Hasan) who have played in all eight editions of the T20 World Cups played so far, and with 39 appearances, he is the most capped player in the competition’s history. He is all set to play in his ninth T20 World Cup for India in June 2024.
