They call him ‘The Sniper’ because he shoots so often – Deeney

Former Premier League striker Troy Deeney has been discussing Pep Guardiola calling Phil Foden “the best player right now in the Premier League”, after the 23-year-old scored twice in the Manchester derby.

“I think it’s the biggest compliment he’s ever given him,” said Deeney on Match of the Day 2. “Normally, he [Pep Guardiola] bats it away and tries to be a bit protective.

“But I think really this season he’s going: ‘The torch is yours, young man, go and walk into it.’ And he’s now made 25 starts of 27 available shows. He was the man of the match and, as Pep said, the guy of the season so far.

“At the moment, I think he’s got everybody else’s respect in this Manchester City team because they’re giving him the ball. Kevin de Bruyne was saying to him: ‘Go and have it, do what you do.’ He gets into these lovely pockets and he dictates the play.

“For his first goal, it’s really good play. He stands him up and bang, deal with that. It’s a great goal and I think Kyle Walker was saying they call him ‘The Sniper’ because he shoots so often in training.

“So this is what he can do and this is what the players are starting to see.

“He was comfortable. It’s a derby, his emotions must’ve been all over the place, but he was comfortable. He tormented Manchester United all day, to the point where Sofyan Amrabat said, ‘have a bit of that’ and just left a bit on him.”

Former Premier League midfielder Danny Murphy added: “It’s football intelligence. He finds pockets of space, wherever he plays, because he’s just got that brightness about his game.

“It’s a wonderful tool to have and Gareth Southgate will be chuffed to bits that he’s been playing so often and impacting so much ahead of the Euros.”
