Artist creates eye-catching photo collages of Dublin you could stare at for hours

Asia's Tech News Daily

If you’re in any way into Irish artists then you have probably heard of Sean Hillen.

Originally from Newry and based in Dublin, Sean creates eye-catching and thought provoking collages that will make you stop, stare and think.

Perched at his table at the Dandelion Market in The Well at St Stephen’s Green, the ever-stylish Sean gave passers by a treat for the eyes with some wonderful Dublin-themed works, presenting us an imagined view of the city we simply could not conjure up ourselves.

With a documentary about his fascinating life coming out on RTE on November 4th, Sean spoke to Dublin Live about where he gets his inspiration for these amazing pieces of art that transform Dublin into a land of wonder and contemplation.

Standing at St Stephen’s Green holding a piece of work that features a whale swimming through The Liffey, Sean reveals: “My secret, if I have one, is that I don’t know what I’m going to make, or if I’m going to make anything. None of them are pre-conceived.

“That’s the joy of collage. You can only work with what you have. But you can play with it. That play can be very creative, exciting and fun. That’s why they stay alive. They have a life of their own.

“I want them to be something you’ve never seen before but also something you can live with and something you can get something out of everyday.”

If you love a sense of wonder and child-like imaginative fantasy, then you’ll want to know about Irelantis, one of Sean’s most interesting and unique creations. Made in the mid to late 90s, this body of works came as a result of Sean’s desire to make art that was “healing”.

He says: “I was in my kitchen in London maybe 30 something years ago, and a song came on the radio called If We Only Had Ireland Over Here. It wet something like, ‘If only Sydney Harbour opened onto Galway Bay’.

“I thought, ‘wow, that would be fun’. Then I hit on the name Irelantis and that gave me a sort of straight direction to go with my work.”

Speaking about the documentary soon to air on RTE, Sean explains that it’s about his journey with his Asperger’s Syndrome.

He says: “I’m an artist but I’m also an Asperger genius weirdo. I’m very off the scale on some things.

“A few years ago, I got diagnosed and realised I was doing everything kind of wrong and now things are turning around. The documentary kind of documents that period of my life when everything was sort of changing.”
