Around 15,000 lightning strikes were registered in Norway last night

The Norwegian Meteorological Institute registered 15,000 lightning strikes last night.

The number of lightning strikes was registered between 6 PM on Monday and 6 AM on Tuesday.

“If I include the entire Skagerrak, it was around 24,000 lightning strikes in total,” on-duty meteorologist Martin Granerød told the newspaper VG.

During the night between Monday and Tuesday, the weather was worst on the coast in Agder and east towards the Oslo Fjord. In addition, there were a lot of lightning strikes in Helgeland on the border with Sweden.

“We may get equally heavy showers today,” Granerød added.

Stormy weather continues

Danger warnings have been issued for lightning, thunderstorms, and torrential rain in Eastern Norway and Rogaland. According to the meteorologist, unpredictable showers will strike from the Skagerrak with rain, thunder, and lightning.

“Exactly where the showers will hit is difficult to say, but I reckon that the coastal areas around Agder and the Oslo Fjord will experience torrential rain today.”

The storm will then move north in Innlandet and up the mountains in Southern Norway.

No power in Agder

In Agder, at one point, close to 6,000 households were without electricity during the night between Monday and Tuesday. At 8:20 AM, 84 households were still without electricity, according to Agder Energi.

“We hope to get it fixed as soon as possible. We are working on it,” press officer Nils Tore Augland said.

More people could be left without electricity if the storm continues, he added.
