Manoj Bajpayee says society is in ‘hopelessness stage’, decodes success of 12th Fail, Pushpa, KGF: ‘Hindustan is sad…people search for heroes who win’
Bollywood actor Manoj Bajpayee, who is known for his contribution toward contemporary parallel cinema, recently delved into the current state of Indian cinema. He shed light on why audiences are drawn to massy actors and larger-than-life films. Drawing examples from South Indian stars like Yash and Allu Arjun, he explained how people seek solace and inspiration from their screen heroes in an otherwise unfulfilling reality.
In conversation with Raj Shamani, Manoj said, “You get success in commercial films when suddenly the audience finds the hero that they have been looking for, and each era is different. Like 20 years back Hindustan was aspirational so they found Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan as their heroes.”
Explaining why films like 12th Fail, Pushpa and KGF found massive success, he said, “Today’s Hindustan is sad because the people somewhere feel that they don’t have what they want so they are searching themselves in Allu Arjun’s Pushpa and Yash’s KGF. They are searching their heroes who win in the end, and that’s also the reason 12th Fail was such a big hit, because people think that they too will succeed one day.”
The actor added, “Currently, we are in the hopelessness stage. So, the society goes through a cycle and in each cycle they search for their heroes and their own story. So the films that reflect that time and the actor that leads this type of cinema, the audience likes to watch them.”
On the professional front, Manoj Bajpayee is currently engrossed in promoting his upcoming film Silence 2: The Night Owl Bar Shootout. Additionally, he has projects like Bhaiyya Ji, Despatch and The Fable in the pipeline.
