Yankees Call Up Starting Pitcher for Doubleheader

The New York Yankees Friday game against the Cleveland Guardians was rained out meaning that the team is able to call up an extra player for Saturday’s doubleheader. The Yankees have chosen right-handed pitcher Cody Poteet as the starter for game two. Poteet last pitched in the major leagues on July 16th 2022 for the Marlins.

Poteet pitched five games for the Yankees in spring training pitching ten innings with a 9.00 ERA. In 2022, Poteet pitched in 12 games pitching 28 innings to a 3.86 ERA. Thus far in the minor league season Poteet has started twice, pitching 8.1 innings with a 2.16 ERA.

This move now allows Luis Gil’s start to be moved back keeping the rotation on its typical rest schedule. Nestor Cortes is now expected to make the start in Sunday’s standalone game.

The Yankees will need significant length out of Clarke Schmidt in game one as the bullpen will face a tall task with tomorrow’s doubleheader. The Yankees will need at least 10 innings out of their two starting pitchers.

The Yankees will likely need a spot starter now as well with six games coming over the next five games with the team headed to Toronto. Luke Weaver is the player on the roster with a chance to be the spot starter while Clayton Beeter and Cody Morris being options on the 40 man roster.

Just Keep Winning Series

The Yankees have won every series to start the season resulting in a 10-3 record and will need to keep this up. The American League East will be incredibly competitive this year and grabbing an early lead in the division is important for a return to the playoffs. The Yankees will face Carlos Carrasco, Triston McKenzie, and Logan Allen all of which have a 4.00+ ERA. The Yankees’ offense will need to pick up starting with Aaron Judge in order to continue their winning ways.
